Nate Mercereau unveils his first single “Joy Techniques” featuring Terrace Martin
Multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter Nate Mercereau debuts his new single “Joy Techniques” featuring Terrace Martin (Kendrick Lamar, Stevie Wonder, YG). “Joy Techniques” is the title track from Mercereau’s forthcoming debut album, out July 12. “Joy Techniques” features echoes of Mercereau’s guitar-synth reverberating between Martin’s saxophone. “We weren’t ever asking for permission to do anything,” Mercereau says of the track. “We just played parts because we felt them in the moment.”
Martin elaborates, “It’s easy to create when the biggest ego in the room is the music, and it’s always easy and fun to create with people that understand that. Nate and Ricky truly understand that and I was honored to be a part of this work of art.”
In anticipation and celebration of the release of Joy Techniques, Mercereau will play an ongoing monthly residency at Los Angeles’ The Virgil, first Sundays beginning May 5. See full details below.
Joy Techniques is the first release on Mercereau’s How So Records, with more to be announced soon. How So Records is a new partnership with Ricky Reed’s Nice Life Recording Company, a venture Mercereau describes as “a record label for seekers. We are presenting music that is looking for something new, out of its audience and out of its creators. We are bound not by genre, only radical creativity. High level music for high level listening.”
Based in Los Angeles, Mercereau’s performance, songwriting and production credits are wide-ranging, including stints as guitarist for Sheila E and Jennifer Hudson. His French horn is featured on “Bam” from JAY-Z’s platinum-certified chart-topper 4:44, while he played guitar, Moog, and celeste on “Mercy Me” and “Blue’s Freestyle/We Family.” In addition to songwriting credits for “Sinful” and “Blood Knows” for Rhye’s Blood, Mercereau played guitar, bass, and French horn throughout the album. He also joined forces with longtime friend and collaborator Ricky Reed to produce “Bet Ain’t Worth The Hand,” “Bad Bad News,” “Beyond,” “Forgive You” and “If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)” on Leon Bridges’ Good Thing, which bowed at #3 on the Billboard Top 200.
