Gavin Hardkiss releases Inheritance 2
Producer and DJ Gavin Hardkiss delivers the second of a four part series of releases as part of the 17+ song album titled Inheritance.
Inheritance tracks Gavin’s life from growing up in South Africa through the ’90s Hardkiss San Francisco era to his current multi-genre tastes. The project is a Basquiat-like collage of sounds inherited along the way. Sounds heard as a boy through the second floor bedroom window in Johannesburg. Sounds heard in dusty warehouses throughout America in the ’90s. Snippets of conversation with people through the years alongside Instagram grabs.
Inheritance will be cascaded as several EPs culminating in the release of the album. Previously, Gavin has released six albums under the guise of Hawke and two albums with his Hardkiss brothers. The single Acid Funk was recently released on Dirtybird Records and singles are regularly released on the Hardkiss Music imprint and other labels including Do Not Sit and Taul Boy Records.
I Appreciate U is inspired by the breakbeat sound of 90s Hardkiss layered with warm ancestral vibes. Kenyan singer Lucinia Karrey compliments Gavin Hardkiss’s vocals snatched from Instagram.
Sawa Sawa Hey is a tribal stomp that continues the collaboration with Nigerian born vocalist and performer Bisi. Previously, Gavin and Bisi released Spirit Of Pinboi EP and other singles including Lovaboat, the George Floyd inspired Better, and the Struggle EP on Hardkiss Music.
Ijunta (greatest honors of my life) playfully snatches vocals from sources including an Instagram grab from Miss South Africa where she talks about growing up in a small town without traffic lights. Crickets and bird sounds compliment the driving afrohouse beats and organically shaped tech synths.
Afro Tamba Tamba (shakedown) with its guitars and highlife chants is a glorious trip from the twentieth century West African sounds to the current Afrohouse sounds influencing DJs everywhere.
