Spam Allstars are known for their innovative blend of Latin, funk, electronic, and improvisational music. Their sound is described as an “electronic descarga”—a modern twist on a traditional Latin jam session. What began as Le Spam’s experimental DJ gigs—featuring live instruments, quirky spoken-word records, and even the smell of Spam frying onstage—evolved into a powerhouse band with a distinct sound. From these playful beginnings, the band grew into a tight-knit group of musicians performing an average of 200 shows for a decade, touring across the U.S. and abroad, with stops in Europe, Canada, South America, and South Africa.
For 15 of those years, their legendary Thursday residency at Little Havana’s Hoy Como Ayer became the heartbeat of Miami nightlife. This residency became the band’s creative catalyst, where their sound reflected the diverse backgrounds and influences of its members.
At the center of it all is Andrew Yeomanson, a.k.a. DJ Le Spam, the band’s founder and driving force. Born in Montreal and raised across Toronto, Bogotá, London, and Tampa, Andrew’s multicultural upbringing and passion for music shaped the band’s ethos.
The lineup includes:
• Tomas Diaz (percussion, Cuba)
• AJ Hill (saxophone, Miami, FL)
• Chad Bernstein (trombone, Chicago, IL)
• Jose Elias (guitar, Dominican Republic)
• Magela Herrera (flute, Cuba)
• Smurphio (keys, Houston, TX)
Additional collaborators, past and present, have added richness to their recordings and performances.
The Spam Allstars have independently released six albums, including Fuacata Live, a Latin Grammy-nominated recording captured during their Hoy Como Ayer residency. Later releases, such as Contra Los Robotic Mutantes and Electrodomésticos, featured notable collaborators like Martin Perna (Antibalas), Pee Wee Ellis (James Brown), Page McConnell (Phish), and John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood). Their last album, Trans-Oceanic, was released in 2017.
These days, Spam Allstars stay closer to home, having logged countless tours and embraced a desire to remain rooted in Miami. With their focus on other ventures and local projects, a rare show by the band is not to be missed—each performance is a celebration of their dynamic sound and enduring legacy.
