Sam Reider & Jorge Glem

@ Joe Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ Center

Friday July 28, 2023

07:00 PM - 11:00 pm

This meeting of master instrumentalists from divergent disciplines unites Bay Area-based accordionist Sam Reider with Venezuelan cuatro player Jorge Glem — a pair of kindred souls who perform the scintillating music from their new collaborative album, Brooklyn-Cumaná.

A San Francisco native, Reider has built a career combining various strains of American music, from jazz and folk to contemporary classical composition and more. A student of jazz piano from an early age, Reider discovered folk music in college and blended his various influences into a singular style that has led to collaboration with Jon Batiste, Sierra Hull, Laurie Lewis, and Paquito d’Rivera.

Since his earliest musical leanings at age six in the coastal Venezuelan city of Cumaná, Jorge Glem has been on a mission to elevate the profile of the four-string cuatro to the level of an internationally recognized virtuoso instrument. The two-time GRAMMY nominee has shared the stage with the C4 Trio, Paquito D’Rivera, Rubén Blades, Natalia Lafourcade, and SFJAZZ Collective pianist Edward Simon.

Glem met Reider at a house party in New York in 2016 while the accordionist was still living in Brooklyn before returning to the Bay Area, and a strong musical bond was formed. After several years of working together they’ve developed a repertoire of original compositions that appear on their 2022 Guataca Records release Brooklyn-Cumaná that features special guests Paquito d’Rivera and Gaby Moreno.
