Mara Hruby

Yoshi's is honored to introduce the fast rising artist from Oakland, CA, Mara Hruby. She arrived on the scene at the start of 2010, playing shows throughout the Bay Area, and on November 30, she released her debut EP, From Her Eyes. Mara worked on this EP for nine months to which she applied her multi-talented dedication to recording, arranging, and engineering her own work. She had previously performed on stage with a Bay Area dance company; fate would prepare her for this path.  She has chosen to speak through music in order to connect with those of us who love music. "From Her Eyes" is now a highly celebrated EP that has captured attention from around the world.

During an interview with a local entertainment magazine, Mara was asked to describe her sound:  “My sound/style comes from what I have experienced in life.  I feel my sound is organic, distinct, melodic, eclectic, and filled with sensitivity.  To say the least, I’d call my music a melodic melting pot.”

The current practice of recording “covers” of well known music by well loved artists, has led to some very creatively unique results.  The surprise breakthrough of Les Nubians’ version of Sade's mellow and soulful ballad, "The Sweetest Taboo," helped their American debut album, Princesses Nubiennes, to achieve a higher position on the Billboard charts than any other French-language album had in the previous decade.

The seven tracks on her "From Her Eyes" EP represent the genesis of the view from Mara’s eyes of the various works of her favorite male artists.  Each song is connected to a memory experience in Mara’s young life.  The beauty and elegance of Van Hunt’s “Character”, Bob Marley’s love for Jah, Mos Def’s soulful poetry, André 3000’s “Take Off Your Cool”, Jamiroquai's "Alright", as well as D’Angelo’s “Send It On” and The Roots "Stereolab" – are all examples of art forms from today’s exceptional musicians.

Mara Hruby is a mesmerizing artist who performs on stage with poise and grace.  You will be surprised to discover how naturally her music will enter your heart and bring out love and inspiration.

Chris Turner

“Music is what I do….” This classically trained crooner deftly combines streams of jazz, hip-hop, funk, and soul in his music; he’s as comfortable with falsetto and scatting as he is with laying down smooth and creative phrasings.

Growing up Oakland, CA, Chris Turner knew at the age of four that he wanted to be a singer just like his father. As a child, he was member of the Kairos Youth Choir at Crowden Music School, performed at the age of nine with the San Francisco Opera Company, and was a student with the Young Musicians Program at the University of California (YMP), one of the leading music training programs in the nation. Chris graduated from the School of the Arts (SOTA) High School in San Francisco and was selected to be the featured vocalist for the SF Jazz High School All-Stars, opening up for jazz greats like Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, and Michael Brecker. He was later selected to the prestigious GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensemble and performed with many GRAMMY artists including Carlos Santana, Kirk Whalum, and Dave Koz.

Chris graduated from the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music in 2007. He currently tours internationally with Bilal Oliver and has toured with Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Brown, Bow Wow, Soulja Boy, and Sean Kingston.
