Future Sounds of Buenos Aires: ZZK Records’ EL G Announces Winter Tour 2012/2013

Pioneering Argentinian label ZZK Records is still hot on the heels of its scene defining compilation ‘Future Sound Of Buenos Aires’ (FSOBA), released earlier this year.  The LA Times praised, “A wildly inventive collection of Argentine music that’s as funky and of-the-moment as any instrumental electronic dance music being made right now.”  Rural South-American-styles fuse with electronic futurism on this stunning snap shot of the burgeoning experimental electronic scene that has emerged in Buenos Aires over recent years.  Label head and American expat El G will be touring the US throughout December and January in support of the critically acclaimed release.  He will be DJing the latest releases from the label and beyond, walking the fine line between eclectic and accessible.

EL G is the DJ name of Grant C. Dull, label manager of ZZK Records, co-founder of Zizek Club and a 8-year adopted citizen & cultural ambassador of Buenos Aires.  DJ sets of El G are powerful showcases of ZZK music: past, present and future.  B-Sides, mashups, bootlegs, official and unofficial releases plus the newest music from the ZZK label is tested on audiences during his fiery, eclectic and intensely fun DJ sets.  El G has commandeered ZZK Records as a global movement, both behind the scenes and on the turntables at festivals like Coachella, Roskilde & Summer Stage in Central Park, NYC.  El G also founded &

El G’s finely curated compilation for ZZK, FSOBA is a collaboration featuring some of the most compelling artists emerging from Buenos Aires’ electronic underground including Mati Zundel, Fauna, Super Guachin and Chancha Via Circuito to name a few.  Learn more on the vibrant ZZK landing page:

For Future Sounds of Buenos Aires, Chancha Via Circuito, Mati Zundel, Frikstailers, Super Guachin, La Yegros, El Remolon, King Coya and more came together to write the collective work. The end result is a chronicle of the burgeoning experimental dance scene that has emerged in Buenos Aires in recent years. Pioneered by the visionary Latin American label ZZK, Buenos Aires’ music fuses classic rural South-American-style with electronic futurism, creating a style that’s wholly unique.

ZZK is the first label to push the sound of Argentina from the villa (ghettos) to the uptown”, says Diplo, “ZZK is a big part in bringing this to the attention of the people.”

Much like what Detroit was to techno and Kingston was to dub and reggae, Buenos Aires is quickly becoming the focal point for this Latin American cultural movement. Future Sounds of Buenos Aires is the defining work of the new movement.

What makes this album interesting is that all of the artists are influenced by the combination of rural, traditional cumbia and folkloric roots mixed with a contemporary street-inspired sounds. The results offer twelve different interpretations of the past blended with the future.

2012 has seen ZZK form new partners in line with their ethos.  With Waxploitation, best known for their work with Danger Mouse in Los Angeles and Kartel, best known for their work with Soundway in London, enhancing it’s reach beyond a DIY, independent operation.  Recent shows at Boiler Room ( and a 2013 full of debut albums from artists like La Yegros and Frikstailers make ZZK a label to watch.  Don’t miss this opportunity to catch one of the finest DJs pushing some of the most progressive sounds in Latin America today.  Catch him at a city near you!

Review of Robert Glasper show in NYC: Songs In the Key of Life

I had the opportunity to attend the Robert Glasper: Songs in the Key of Life concert at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse on Thursday December 13th, 2012 for the 10pm show.

Going into the show, I did not know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. At the sold out performance, The Robert Glasper Experiment along with special guests for the evening, Lalah Hathaway, Eric Roberson, Stokley, and Questlove on the drums paid homage to the music of Stevie Wonder.

As a huge Stevie Wonder fan, I was in awe of Rober Glasper’s interpretations of Stevie’ music from the pinnacle album “Songs in the Key of Life” originally released in 1976.  To my surprise, my favorite song “Rocket Love” from his 1980 “Hotter than July” album was performed with such soul and with an amazing saxophone solo by Casey Benjamin. Such soulful interpretations kept the crowd dancing in their seats the entire night, and when the evening ended, everyone was begging for the music to continue. It is my hope that Harlem Stage brings back the Robert Glasper Experiment for more shows in the future since it felt the evening just begun with the music ended!

The Soul Rebels Play at Highline Ballroom (CMJ) 10/19/12

It’s that time of year where the CMJ Music Marathon hits New York City for it’s annual event. Though I am an Ohioan transplanted and living in NYC, I have a huge affinity for funk and soul. This year on Friday October 19th, 2012 you can experience the blending sounds of Mardi Gras funk, soul, R&B and pop by the eight-piece brass ensemble straight from New Orleans known as The Soul Rebels.

This show is not to be missed. They will perform songs from their first international album, Unlock Your Mind, which was released in January of 2012 on Rounder Records. The Soul Rebels do a mean funky cover of “Sweet Dreams” originally by British pop music duo Eurythmics. Another great tune by The Soul Rebels is “504” that is sure to get the crowd dancing. As The Soul Rebels say “Everybody get up on the floor and enjoy yourself!” and check out their CMJ showcase on Friday October 19th, 2012 at The Highline Ballroom.

Yoshi Akiba of Yoshi’s Jazz Club Launches 51Oakland Non-Profit Organization

Benefiting Performing Arts and Music Education in Oakland Public Schools

(Oakland, CA) – Wednesday, July 25, 2012 – Forty years ago Yoshi Akiba and her partners launched the first incarnation of Yoshi’s Jazz Club and Japanese Restaurant. Once a small Berkeley restaurant, Yoshi’s is now recognized for bringing world-class musicians to its Oakland and San Francisco locations, while showcasing an array of local talent. Now, Akiba is expanding her vision to include Oakland youth with the launch of 51Oakland, a non-profit organization in partnership with Yoshi’s Jazz Club, that promotes educational, artistic and musical opportunities for Oakland youth. This weekend the organization will host two all-ages events benefiting performing arts and music education in Oakland public schools. “Oakland children do not have enough opportunity,” she says noting the funding cuts for arts and music programming in the schools. “We want to create opportunities for them that they’ve lost.”

The indoor and outdoor celebration at Oakland’s Toast Wine Lounge will kick-off the two-day community fundraiser on Sunday, July 29th. Hosted by Yoshi Akiba, with a special appearance from Don Reed, the event is from noon to 9pm and will feature live musical performances every hour, on the hour. Attendees will enjoy selections from David Gans (Host of KPFA’s “Dead To The World,” and Sirius XM’s “Tales From The Golden Road”), Kev Choice (keyboardist, composer, band leader, educator), Jordan McConnell (Grammy nominated musician), Cava Menzies Quartet featuring Shawn Whitehorn (keyboardist, educator), OUSD Ensemble, and DJ Jah Styles. Guests can also enjoy a delicious family-friendly menu and participate in a silent auction.

Don Reed, double NAACP Theatre award nominee, writer and Oakland native, revives his critically acclaimed one-man show East 14th: True Tales of a Reluctant Player for day two of fundraising in support of arts in Oakland public schools. The special one night only performance will take place atYoshi’s Oakland on Monday, July 30th. Praised by The New YorkerSan Francisco Chronicle, and East Bay Express, the play explores surprising family dynamics, rebellion, and the complexity of one’s moral compass.

Proceeds from both events go to making sure that Oakland students are afforded the resources and opportunities that will enable them to become the world-class musicians and artists that have been celebrated on the Yoshi’s stage for the last 40 years.

About 51Oakland
51Oakland was established in 2011 by Yoshi Akiba, co-owner of the renowned musical venues, Yoshi’s Oakland and Yoshi’s San Francisco, and Jason Hofmann, a young Oakland-based entrepreneur and former educator who, within the last few years, has become increasingly involved in philanthropic activities benefiting youth.

51Oakland, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, is organized and operated solely to promote educational, artistic and musical opportunities for youth in the Oakland community. An advocate of the Oakland Unified School District, 51Oakland provides access to mentoring, nurturing and training by professional musicians and, later this year, will underwrite and organize a monthly concert series, “Live at Yoshi’s,” featuring Oakland’s finest youth talent.

Detroit’s Movement Electronic Music Festival 2010

Paxahau Event Productions announces the lineup for the Movement Electronic Music Festival Powered by Ford Fiesta on May 29-31 at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit with the likes of Inner City, Model 500, Larry Heard, Mr. Scruff, Kid Sister, Phat Kat & Guilty Simpson w/Will Sessions, Recloose, Stacey Pullen, Theo Parrish & more…

The second coming of Motown continues to unfold as one of Detroit’s newest, quality sound factories releases their first full-length compilation this week. After debuting the label 2 years ago with a string of solid singles, tight remixes and the clever “Particularly Handsome” EP of 2008, ExchangeBureauMusic is now playing with a full deck – a library sturdily built on a no-filler artist roster and undeniable grimey funk for which the D is known.

Detroit — land of Motown, of turntable glory, of black soil and rich musicianship. While the streets of forgotten New France are blemished with potholes, the neighborhoods tormented by burnt down houses, and the abandoned factories ghosts of evacuated industry, the underground music scene is packed with midnight marauders and pitch pioneers who take desolate environments and turn them into musical opportunities where innovation reigns supreme. While the mass media has declared Detroit dead, music aficionados know better – we know it is only growing stronger, a cultural underground brewing beneath the surface, preparing to reign supreme just as it has when the Motor City birthed Motown, and Techno, and its innumerable contributions to each of the other major music genres.
