Music Supervisor and Now Jazzy Soul Singer Music Carolyn Releases “Satisfied”

A classically-trained vocalist whose first musical instrument was the clarinet, Music Carolyn’s tastes in music run the gamut from classical, to free jazz, to R&B to her foundation, gospel. Of her new release she says, “Don’t call it a single, it’s a #musicalmindset, an offering of #appreciation for #trust and #security and #reliability and #lastinglove.” She calls her brand of songs and stories soul jazz fusion. Her influences also include Jill Scott, Amel Larrieux, and Sade, but her sound is closer to Faith Evans, Brandy, and Tamia.

As we await the rush of ocean waves and the thrill of fireworks, enjoy “Satisfied” produced by Ty Macklin who’s worked with the likes of Erykah Badu, India Arie, N’dambi, Noel Gourdin and Sy Smith just to name a few.

“Satisfied” is a mid-tempo love fest for the feel-good thoughts you have in a satisfying long-term relationship or marriage. An expose on the simple things you don’t have to worry about when you’ve found, “The One.” The song has swanky backgrounds that remind us how much we miss Brandy’s intricate vocal arrangements, a walking bass line that makes the vibey tune “grind-able” and syncopated rhythms that groove listeners into a smooth two-step. Musically, Music Carolyn’s jazzy lead vocals, compliment the soul and hip-hop fused together magically by neo-soul producer Ty Macklin.

The song starts off with soothing harmonies that lead into a laid-back lead vocal that launches with stable and secure musings about a woman who says, “There’s never been a reason to doubt your devotion.” The chorus simply says “I’m Satisfied” but with infectious 4-part harmony that shifts and accents different syllables, lulling listeners to sing along. The lyric’s subject matter and the jazzy vocals, ad libs of which recall Anita Baker at times, make “Satisfied” a mood for people who aren’t new to love, but also don’t at all feel like it’s old. This song is a shout out to those who still feel “in love.”

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah Releases New Single “Forevergirl” ft. Chris Turner & Mike Larry Draw

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah releases “Forevergirl,” the second single from his upcoming album Ancestral Recall (out March 22nd via the Ropeadope / Stretch Music labels). Featuring Chris Turner and Mike Larry Draw, the song was praised by The FADER who called it “a hypersyncopated but blissful love song.”

So far the album has also been praised by New York Times, Afropunk, Highsnobiety, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, HipHopDX, Cool Hunting, Brooklyn Vegan, and Paste, who said “the future of jazz is here and Adjuah is shattering boundaries in incredible ways.” Additional collaborators on Ancestral Recall include Saul Williams, Elena Pinderhughes, Weedie Braimah, Logan Richardson, and others.

Listen to “Forevergirl (ft. Chris Turner & Mike Larry Draw)

Heralded by NPR as ushering in “a new era in jazz,” Adjuah continues to forge new ground. In 2015, Adjuah released Stretch Music – the inaugural recording of Adjuah’s vision of genre blindness in sound. The trailblazing document centered around acculturating as many musical forms, vernaculars, and cultures as possible into one fresh and resonate creative improvised concept. The recording garnered Adjuah a Downbeat Critics Poll “Rising Star Composer” win in addition to many “Rising Star Trumpet” wins from the publication. Stretch Music was accompanied by a groundbreaking app by the same name, for which Adjuah won JAZZFM’s 2015 Innovation of the Year honor.

The Centennial Trilogy: Adjuah’s three-album series commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first jazz recordings was released in 2017. The recordings are a sobering re-evaluation of the world’s social and political realities and speaks to a litany of issues that continue to plague the collective human experience. The trilogy was praised by Pitchfork, NPR Music, Stereogum, The FADER, GQ, The New York Times, Interview Magazine, Paste, Noisey, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, and many more. The final album of the trilogy, The Emancipation Procrastination, was nominated forBest Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 61st GRAMMY Awards. The recording marks Adjuah’s second nomination

Ancestral Recall continues Adjuah’s mission to unify people via their musical and cultural voices by tearing down the sonic and social constructs that separate them. As a newly ascended Chieftain in the Black masking culture of New Orleans, he has been deeply committed to turning identity politics, as it is used in music, on its ear. Ancestral Recall seeks to excavate and update hidden histories in sound by displaying a sonic tapestry that illuminates the har-melodic movements found within rhythm.

Adjuah explains: “In its inception, Ancestral Recall was built as a map to decolonize sound; to challenge previously held misconceptions about some cultures of music; to codify a new folkloric tradition and begin the work of creating a national set of rhythms; rhythms rooted in the synergy between West African, First Nation, African Diaspora/Caribbean rhythms and their marriage to rhythmic templates found in trap music, alt-rock, and other modern forms. It is time we created a sound that dispels singular narratives of entire peoples and looks to finally represent the wealth of narratives found throughout the American experience. An experience that shows all forms of expression in sound are valid, as all people are.” The goal is to connect people in one understanding rather than dividing them by definition.

Christian was also just featured on Boogie’s “Whose Fault” from the album Everything For Sale, which reached #1 on the iTunes hip hop charts upon release on January 24, 2019.
