Motown Magic Soundtrack + Netflix Series

Precedes Motown Magic NETFLIX Series

Featuring Motown Classics As Reimagined By NE-YO, Becky G,
BJ The Chicago Kid, Skylar Grey, Calum Scott and Trombone Shorty

Screen Shot 2018-11-19 at 12.34.01 PM

Melodia/Motown Records unveils MOTOWN MAGIC ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK in stores and at all digital retailers. Get it HERE. The soundtrack precedes the upcoming November 20 premiere of Josh Wakely’s animated NETFLIX series, MOTOWN MAGIC. For this very special collection, a bevy of modern superstars and cast members re-recorded 13 of Motown’s most recognizable hits, painting these classics in a new light for the next generation.

Teasing out the release, the series’ theme song The Jackson 5’s “ABC,” which showcases the talents of Zacary James (Melisizwe Brothers) and The Motown Magic Cast, introduced the project just last week. USA Today broke the news and shared an exclusive video in this feature, while Deadline released the official trailer .Moreover, show creators dove in-depth to the concept and inspiration behind the series for Billboard.

The album ultimately translates the enduring and eternal power of Motown into a fun and family friendly world. Check out the full tracklisting below and experience Motown like never before.

Beyond “ABC, three-time GRAMMY® winner NE-YO reimagined Stevie Wonder’s No. 1 hit “Superstition.” Other artists featured on the album, produced by Wakely, include Becky G, BJ The Chicago Kid, Skylar Grey, Calum Scott and Trombone Shorty. Motown legend Smokey Robinson, Executive Music Producer for the series, contributes newly recorded versions of two hits that he co-wrote for other artists: “My Girl,” which was The Temptations’ first No. 1 hit, and “I’ll Be Doggone,” which was Marvin Gaye’s first single to top the R&B chart and has never before been recorded by Robinson. The soundtrack’s recordings were produced by Don Was, Harvey Mason Jr., Bob Mothersbaugh and Sean Carey.

Inspired by the iconic music of Motown, the groundbreaking series features original characters and a fantastical world from the mind of Wakely, creator of Netflix’s Emmy®-winning kids’ series, BEAT BUGS. MOTOWN MAGIC follows Ben, a wide-eyed eight-year-old with a big heart and an amazing imagination, who uses his magic paintbrush to bring the street-art decorating his city, Motown, to life. Each 11-minute episode incorporates a plotline inspired by the themes and characters of a classic Motown song, and an original version of that song covered by a contemporary artist. The series, premiering November 20 on Netflix, is produced by Grace: a storytelling company (Grace).

“It’s always time to introduce the music of Motown to a new generation, and Josh Wakely has the creativity and the vision to entertain families all over the world,” said Smokey Robinson. “It’s exciting to see these timeless classics reimagined through extraordinary animation and heartfelt stories while still honoring the roots of the music.”

“There are little things that happen on those [original Motown] records,” said Detroit-born Don Was, the GRAMMY-winning producer who is President of Blue Note Records. Was explains, “that was one of the biggest thrills of all time, to listen to these tracks to figure out what was really happening, and to try to capture those little nuanced moments that gave the songs their character.”

Throughout its illustrious history, the Motown music label has released some of the world’s most beloved songs, many of which are featured in MOTOWN MAGIC. For this series, Wakely secured rights to the Jobete Music Company and Stone Diamond publishing catalogs in an agreement with EMI Songs Australia Pty Limited. <

RE-ISSUED: Imamu Amiri Baraka’s Pan-African manifesto “It’s Nation Time” on Motown/UMe

Imamu Amiri Baraka’s Pan-African manifesto It’s Nation Time — African Visionary Music, out of print since 1972, is available once again via Motown/UMe.

The spoken-word jazz album, originally released on Motown Records’ Black Forum subsidiary, has been repressed on 150g black vinyl with tip-on jacket in a faithful reproduction of the original packaging.

Order It’s Nation Time — African Visionary Music now here

A poet, writer, theater director, activist and more whose career spanned five decades, Baraka (born LeRoi Jones) fearlessly vouched for racial equality until his passing in 2014. For It’s Nation Time, his first album, Baraka was backed by many threads of African-American musical expression, including a funk band led by James Mtume and a free jazz quartet featuring bassists Reggie Workman and Herbie Lewis, pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, and drummer Idris Muhammad.

More than four decades later, It’s Nation Time is thrilling and evocative. Over an R&B groove, “Who Will Survive” ponders who will be left standing in the midst of Western carnage. (“Some Americans, very few Negroes, and no crackers at all,” Baraka dryly reports.) “Who we are is the magic people / The black genius prophets of the planet,” he insists in “Answers.” In “Pull the Covers Off,” Baraka calls for liberation in syncopation over Bartz’s high-poweredhorn. On “Come Back Pharoah,” he forms a call-and-response with backing singer Gwen Guthrie ten years before she was a solo star.

In addition, this “African man’s vision/version of music,” as it states in the liner notes, was newly mixed in stereo from the original analog master tapes by award-winning engineer and producer Russell Elevado (D’Angelo, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Kamasi Washington, et al).

It’s Nation Time — African Visionary Music sums up all of the late Baraka’s brilliant dimensions and rough edges. On this beguiling, outspoken lost album, we hear a brilliant artist fighting fire with fire in a socially, politically and racially precarious moment in American history. Whether familiar or unfamiliar with the unique, prolific Baraka, fans of experimental music with forthrightness should look no further than this uncompromising work.

Marcus Strickland Releases New Album ‘People of the Sun’ via Blue Note/Revive Music

Brooklyn composer-saxophonist Marcus Strickland released his thrilling new LP People of the Sun via Blue Note/Revive Music.

Recently, Strickland released the single “On My Mind (ft. Bilal, Pharoahe Monch, Greg Tate),” which was praised by Brooklyn Vegan, Ambrosia For Heads, HipHopDX, Jazziz, and more. Before “On My Mind” Strickland released the first single “Timing,” featuring Charles Haynes on drums, Mitch Henry on keys, and Kyle Miles on bass. Of the track WBGO’s Nate Chinen said “Strickland’s imploring tenor works as a lead vocal against [the band’s] root-level rattle and hum.”

When last we heard from Strickland on 2016′s Nihil Novi, he was experimenting with hip-hop-inspired production, blending genres with a little help from album producer Meshell Ndegeocello. In the process, something big happened: “I was no longer concerned about what is or isn’t jazz,” he says. “I got rid of those barriers and was like, ‘Well, who the fuck am I?’ That’s when I started on this path.”

On People of the Sun, Strickland blazes down that trail fully at the helm of his music—performing, writing, and producing with his outrageously able Twi-Life band on deck—even as he sonically and socially traces the African diaspora from present to past in an effort to unpack his identity. “I’m thinking about where we came from,” says Strickland, “and how that clashes and goes hand in hand with what we’ve created here as Black Americans.” The result is an album that’s busy and beautiful, inventive and contemplative, an amalgam of influences from West Africa (griot culture, Afrobeat, percussion) and America (post-bop, funk-soul, beat music) performed in the key of revelation. Another facet that sets the album apart is Strickland’s lesser-known woodwind obsession with the bass clarinet, which adds its noirish hues to so many of these songs.

Growing up in Miami, Strickland always thought of music “in a very mixed up way.” He heard Haitian sounds, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and southern rap in the streets, while at home his dad would jump from Stevie to Coltrane to P-Funk on his reel-to-reel deck. Meanwhile, his mom put Marcus and his twin brother E.J. into art school so they’d be surrounded by proper “music nerds.” The talent they nurtured there on saxophone and drums (respectively) propelled the pair on to The New School at just the right time: college was basically one wild jam session with like minded upstarts like Robert Glasper, Keyon Harrold, and Bilal Oliver—guys who’d go on to remake jazz (and more) in their own post-modern musical image. To hear People of the Sun, that backdrop feels more like fate than chance.

The tracklisting for People of the Sun is as follows:

1. Lullaby feat. Weedie Braimah
2. Timing
3. People Of The Sun feat. Mitch Henry
4. On My Mind feat. Bilal, Pharoahe Monch, and Greg Tate
5. Relentlessness
6. Marvelous feat. Akie Bermiss
7. Black Love
8. Build
9. Cloaked In Controversy
10. Aim High feat. Jermaine Holmes
11. Spirit Of The Music

FestForums Salutes “The Year of the Woman” at its upcoming Santa Barbara Conference, November 14-16

Guest performers and speakers include Michael McDonald, Dennis Quaid and the Sharks, Christopher Guest, Dishwalla, Judith Owen and Harry Shearer

Addressing cutting-edge technology, sponsorships, talent, ticketing, scheduling, working with brands, operations, sustainability, charitable work, innovation and safety, FestForums unites festivals and events from around the world of all sizes for lively collaboration, camaraderie and professional development.

The theme for the FestForums SB ’18 conference is “The Year of the Woman.” Supporting this focus will be a roll-out of a brand-new TechTrender program highlighting women in the music festival industry who create noteworthy advancements in technology, presented in partnership with FestivalSquad as well as Julie Johnson and her company Armored Things.

FestForums will feature two keynotes. The first featured speaker at FestForums is Hope Hall, the noted documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and photographer, who also served as President Obama’s principal videographer at the White House in the Office of Digital Strategy. She will explore mindfulness under the tutelage of 44. Other female speakers include sponsorship guru Lesa Ukman, who was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at FestForums NYC 2018, former RI poet Laureate Lisa Starr, festival producer Giselle Coy, Another Planet executive Danielle Madeira, actor/musician Nia Peeples, Tribeca’s Rachel Mandel, TIFF’s Anita Cotic and many more luminaries of the festival world.

FestForums SB ’18 will honor Maureen Ford as its Woman of the Year. As President of Live Nation’s Media & Sponsorship’s National Sales team, Ford oversees one of the most innovative sales forces in the industry.

There will also be a Salute to Women Lunch, sponsored by Lynn King Smith and her female helmed-company TicketForce, as well as a very special musical performance by acclaimed artist Judith Owen.

“More so than at any other time, it feels very appropriate that we salute the incredible leadership women have had in this industry,” says Laurie Kirby, who co-produces and co-founded FestForums with Stuart MacNaught. “I’m so thrilled to have Stuart as a business partner because of the way he supports our mission of highlighting women and their successes. We are an inclusive event, a family of sorts, that delights in giving voice to the best and the brightest. We know that women do the heavy lifting in so many areas of our culture, and they are the unsung ‘sheroes’ of our community. This is our chance to celebrate them.”

Echoing Kirby’s sentiments, MacNaught quotes Martin Luther King, Jr.: “’Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that.’ And so, 2018 is our year to shine our light on women. Having a brilliant, dynamic and very capable female partner, I regularly witness sexual discrimination directed her way. It doesn’t happen every day, but the fact that it happens at all in 2018 means we need to spotlight and address the problem.”

Past guest artists and musical performances have included Kenny Loggins, Jack Johnson, T Bone Burnett, Jeff Bridges, Matthew Modine, Quentin Tarantino, Cat Cora, Alice Cooper, Fisher Stevens, the Coen Brothers, Frances Fisher, Rita Coolidge, Dave Mason, Bruce Dern, Chuck Leavell and Shep Gordon, among others.

The FestForums Santa Barbara conference features a glittering array of talent. Among the artists lined up are Carly Jo Jackson, DJ Darla Bea and Chris Pelonis. Featured artists performing are Michael McDonald, Dennis Quaid (who will appear with his band the Sharks) and Dishwalla.

This year’s event will see three performers receive Lifetime Achievement Awards for their contribution to the arts. First up is acclaimed actor Dennis Quaid. Chris Pelonis will present the award to Michael McDonald, and he’ll be joined by last year’s Living Legend Award recipient, Kenny Loggins. The event will conclude with a keynote address by actor, musician and comedian Harry Shearer (who just so happens to be married to Judith Owen), who will receive his own award from his Spinal Tap bandmate, actor and director Christopher Guest.

“We’re always thrilled and honored by all of the stars who lend their time and talents to FestForums,” says Kirby. “I have no doubt that everybody attending this year’s event will have an incredible time with all of the musicians and guests we’ll be featuring.”
