New Release: Kandace Springs ‘Black Orchid’ EP + Video

Kandace Springs‘ ‘Black Orchid EP‘, featuring brand new tracks from her forthcoming album produced by Karriem Riggins. I was hoping you’d post the news along with the video for her take on The Stylistics’ “People Make the World Go Round,” watch here:

Other songs on the EP include her cover of the Roberta Flack-popularized torch song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (a crowd favorite at Kandace’s live shows), along with the ruminative “Black Orchid” which highlights the acoustic strum of guitarist-songwriter Jesse Harris (who struck GRAMMY gold with Norah Jones by penning her breakout hit “Don’t Know Why”).

Prince once said that Kandace Springs “has a voice that could melt snow.” The music icon heard her cover of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” online and invited her to perform with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain, becoming a mentor to the young singer and pianist. Another legend, Daryl Hall, also discovered Kandace early on, inviting her to perform on his TV show Live from Daryl’s House. Kandace will open for Hall & John Oates along their co-headline North American summer tour with Train (dates here).

In 1985, Miles Davis shocked the music world by moving from Columbia Records to Warner Bros. and started recording Rubberband. This album marked a radical departure for him, with funk and soul grooves, and was to include vocals by Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan.

Produced by Miles Davis, Randy Hall and Zane Giles, the line-up boasted Miles on trumpet and keyboards, keyboardists Adam Holzman, Neil Larsen and Wayne Linsey, percussionist Steve Reid, saxophonist Glen Burris, and Miles’s nephew Vince Wilburn Jr., on drums.

Engineered by Reggie Dozier (brother of Lamont Dozier, part of the legendary Motown songwriting team), the Rubberband sessions took place at Ameraycan Studios in Los Angeles from October 1985 to January 1986. The album was subsequently shelved, and Miles went on to record Tutu. “It was fat grooves, really funky, Miles talking. It was street and funky and dirty.

We didn’t go after writing a great jazz song, Miles wanted the street thing; he wanted the chord changes he wanted to play. The basis was to take it to the street like On the Corner, it was Miles taking more chances,” said Randy Hall. Zane Giles added, “Miles kept saying ‘I don’t wanna do my usual stuff. I wanna do something different.”

32 years after Rubberband was recorded, the original producers, Randy Hall and Zane Giles, teamed up with Miles’s nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., to finish and update the title track. In September 2017, they invited soulful singer Ledisi to guest on vocals at the Village Studios in Los Angeles.

The sessions, co-produced by Anthony “Mac Nass” Loffman and Arthur Haynes for SmashSound Syndicate, together with the original title track, will be released as a 45rpm vinyl 12” EP this Saturday on Record Store Day 2018.

An important moment in music history, the Rubberband full album is due for release in

The 5 Greatest Pop Songs Of All Time

What makes a great pop song? Let’s face it, the lyrics don’t always have to be meaningful as long as they’re memorable; the music has to have a hook that grabs the attention too, and the chorus has to be something you want to hear again and again. Add to this a top-quality singer and an accomplished band, and you could have a truly great pop song – like these examples in our all-time five to one countdown.

5. She Loves You – The Beatles

The Beatles changed their style endlessly throughout a relatively short career because above all else, the Beatles were music lovers and experts. They would have loved the academic side of studying music, like that found in a master of music education course at Rutgers University Online, but their greatest gift, of course, is their incredible albums and singles. ‘She Loves You’ from 1963 is one of their earlier releases, but it became the best-selling song in the United Kingdom in the sixties and is still memorable worldwide. Come on, who doesn’t do the Paul McCartney head wobble when they sing ‘woooh!’ to this song?

4. Hit Me Baby One More Time – Britney Spears

Britney was a Mickey Mouse Club child prodigy, but when ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ hit the airwaves in October 1998, the world quickly realized that Britney was now all grown up. This is perhaps the most infectious pop song of the nineties, and the video, whilst controversial, helped to propel Britney to the pinnacle of pop megastardom where, with one or two well-publicized blips, she’s remained ever since.

3. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) – Whitney Houston

We all know the tragic story of New Jersey’s Whitney Houston, but just one listen to this classic pop song is enough to erase all memories of everything except her beautiful soaring voice. Now over thirty years old, this is still a favorite track to play at weddings for the simple reason that it’s a song that it’s impossible not to dance to. It’s full of the joy of life and is a fine tribute to the genius that was Whitney at the height of her fame.

2. Waterloo – ABBA

Think of a great topic for a pop song? Were you thinking about the defeat of Napoleon by the Duke of Wellington that put an end to wars engulfing Europe? Nope? ABBA were, and their thinking outside of the box paid off in big style. ‘Waterloo’ won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 before selling over six million copies. At one point it was said the group was Sweden’s biggest export, proof that pop perfection can really pay.

1. Billie Jean – Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was called the ‘King of Pop’ and many of his songs could rightly have been considered for this list, from ‘Thriller’ to ‘Beat It’ and ‘Man In The Mirror’, but it’s ‘Billie Jean’ that takes the very top spot. Admit it, you’re singing this song in your head right now – and that’s a happy space to be in. Everything about this single is touched by magic, so let’s tip our hat to the King in the rakish fashion he made his own.

Music education from Rutgers University and other top seats of learning can help you make the most of your music potential, allowing you to teach others the joy of music too. You may not make a great pop song yourself, but you’ll still be able to appreciate these five classic tunes, and you’ll also be able to explain the composition techniques behind them and the major chords used. As Michael Jackson himself would have said, ‘Shamone!’

Kicking Off with European Dates in May, the Tour Finds the Detroit Artist Bringing Songs From the Acclaimed FEVER Album to Life

Fusing funk, electronic, soul, rock, and rap into an electrifying and inimitable blend, Detroit artist Black Milk redefines the parameters of hip-hop. Reuniting with his powerhouse backing band Nat TurnerBlackMilk announces the FEVER Tour, a 24-date tour spanning Europe and the United States. Featuring the thunderous rhythm section of Malik Hunter on bass and new addition Daru Jones (formerly of Jack White‘s live band) on drums, and with brilliant accents and solos from Aaron “Ab” Abernathy on keys, a Black Milk concert is an unforgettable live experience, with the rapper directing traffic and bringing new energy to his catalogue.

Kicking off in May, the tour will start with European dates in Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal, before heading to the US West Coast on June 13 in San Diego. The upcoming tour will find Black Milk & Nat Turner performing songs from FEVERBlackMilk‘s acclaimed new album, which Pitchfork praised, saying “FEVER continues the Detroit rapper/producer’s expanding live hip-hop jazz-band tradition and leans into psychedelic neo-soul in the process, something like P-Funk meets the Ummah.” Buy tickets for the FEVER Tour here, with Midwest/East Coast tour dates coming soon.

A cohesive 12-track project that touches on vital issues such as racism, social media addiction, among others, listening to FEVER evokes the feeling of scrolling through an endless news feed, finding BlackMilk reporting and commenting on the world’s problems with empathy, clarity, and wit.Black Milk‘s sixth solo rap album, and his first since 2014′s If There’s a Hell BelowFEVER combines pointed and topical lyrics and brilliant musicianship, including percussion from all-star musicians Chris “Daddy” Dave (D’Angelo, Adele, Justin Bieber) and Daru Jones, bass by long-time collaborator Malik Hunter and keys and guitar from newcomers Ian Fink and Sasha Kashperko, respectively.

The album boasts the acclaimed single Laugh Now Cry Later, which earned acclaim from critics, including Stereogum who said, “… we hear Black Milk’s pointed, unpretentious flow over a beat that’s full of electronic gasps and live-bass burbles. Seriously: The beat here is incredible.” Premiered by NPR in February, the “Laugh Now Cry Later” video gives us a glimpse into a-day-in-the-lives of a young couple trapped in a social media bubble where issues tug at their emotions but ultimately fail to evoke action. Featuring additional vocals from DweleAaron “Ab” Abernathy, and Sudie (a producer/vocalist signed to BlackMilk’s Computer Ugly label), FEVER released via Computer Ugly and Mass Appeal Records.

Kamasi Washington’s Heaven and Earth out June 22, New Songs Debut + Tour Dates

“‘The world that my mind lives in, lives in my mind.’

This idea inspired me to make this album Heaven and Earth. The reality we experience is a mere creation of our consciousness, but our consciousness creates this reality based on those very same experiences. We are simultaneously the creators of our personal universe and creations of our personal universe. The Earth side of this album represents the world as I see it outwardly, the world that I am a part of. The Heaven side of this album represents the world as I see it inwardly, the world that is a part of me. Who I am and the choices I make lie somewhere in between.”

The long-awaited follow up to Washington’s debut The Epic, Heaven and Earth is comprised of two halves, which find Washington confronting quotidian realities with cosmic themes. A further investigation of Washington’s world building ideas, the new album explores his reckoning with current global chaos and his vision for the future.
“Fists of Fury” and “The Space Travelers Lullaby” debut today alongside a pair of accompanying scenes created by acclaimed British artist and director Jenn Nkiru. The visual pieces are inspired by a more expansive collaborative Heaven and Earth film project that is due for release later in the year.
Washington convened his band, The Next Step, as well as members of the long running collective The West Coast Get Down at Henson Studios in Los Angeles to record the 16 tracks on Heaven and Earth. The music was composed, written and arranged by Washington, with new arrangements of jazz and bebop legend Freddie Hubbard’s “Hubtones” and iconic kung fu film theme “Fists of Fury,” as well as one song by bandmate Ryan Porter. Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Ronald Bruner, Jr., Cameron Graves, Brandon Coleman, Miles Mosley, Patrice Quinn, Tony Austin and many more contribute to the album.
Heaven and Earth, over two and a half hours of music, will be available on double deluxe CD and a four piece vinyl housed in bespoke double gatefold sleeve, in addition to all digital services. The album is available to pre-order via
To celebrate the release of Heaven and Earth, Washington will tour globally with stops in London, Paris, Berlin, New York, Tokyo and beyond. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets for select dates before the general public beginning April 18 at 10 A.M. local through Thursday April 19 at 10 P.M. local.
Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist and producer born and raised in Los Angeles. He grew up playing jazz in the city’s storied Leimert Park neighborhood under the tutelage of his father, Rickey Washington. Forming his first band, the Young Jazz Giants, with Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, Ronald Bruner, Jr. and Cameron Graves in high school, Washington went on to study ethnomusicology at UCLA and play with Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq and more.

His debut album, The Epic, was released in 2015 to rapturous critical reception, universally embraced as one of the best of the year and awarded the inaugural American Music Prize. Heaven and Earth follows The Epic as well as Washington’s 2017 EP Harmony of Difference, an exploration of the musical concept of counterpoint that debuted as an original work for the 2017 Whitney Museum of Art Biennial.
