The tenth edition of the highly coveted and independently produced three-day event will once again offer a wide spectrum of up-and-comers, local luminaries, trailblazers and pioneers in Techno, House and Hip-Hop, featuring headlining performances by Techno trailblazer Richie Hawtin, legendary hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg as DJ Snoopadelic as well as Boys Noize and Skrillex as Dog Blood. 2015 Grammy-nominated duo, Disclosure will make their festival debut and perform alongside some of their favorite acts for their traveling Wild Life showcase.

Kenn Starr: ‘Square One’ (Full Album Stream)

‘Square One’ Will Be Released On 1-27-15 & Includes Production From Black Milk & Kev Brown

Kenn Starr sees his career at square one, despite being regarded among the elite of the DMV scene, and being in the inner circle of producers Oddisee and Kev Brown, and having his newest album signed to Mello Music Group. Eight years since his debut, Starr Status, Kenn Starr is baggage free on his sophomore album, Square One.

Largely produced by Kev Brown with a nice block of production by Black Milk, and additional work by 14KT, Roddy Rod, and Kaimbr, Square One is Kenn Starr getting back to his foundation to begin anew. The laid back flow remains intact—complementary to the Kev Brown’s vintage soul-crate production—but the perspective is written with a wisdom earned through seeing opportunities that overpassed his doorstep. On “Cigarettes & Whiskey“ he addresses his history with passing fancy and a buried hatchet, “please pardon my view points / Starr Status wasn’t a classic but had a few joints,” and makes no qualms about his hiatus. Square One is the only album Kenn Starr could write in order to bid farewell to days past and move forward.
With the firmest of grips on reality, Kenn Starr has kept his Low Budget Crew ties in toe, including Sean Born who makes appearances on “Product Of The Basement” and album closer, “Farewell”. Kenn also enlists Mello Music standout yU, and long time compatriot Wordsworth, as well as the lush voice of singing star Melanie Rutherford. Square One is built from the underground-up as Starr still writes from the mindset of being a product of the basement.

Kenn Starr’s Square One will be released on 1-27-15 via Mello Music Group.

3D Printing and 3D Scanning Review [CES 2015]

3D printing and 3D scanning made a big statement at this year’s CES!  The products that the printers have created have made a large leap in technological advances from printed garments to printed band instruments that were performing live at the show.  One of the highlighted products that we enjoyed was Polar 3D which uses a printing circular bed instead of square bed that helps giving larger diameter for printing.  Some acclaimed 3D printers were Ultimaker Pro and Makerbot making them great for high resolution printing with open source platforms that allows you to bring in meshes that they’re user base community has created.

The 3D scanning was too mind boggling.  If you need to create or make references to objects your building the scanner is very useful.  With Shining 3D You have the ability to scan objects on plates and with iSense you can scan with a handheld device hooked to your Tablet.  With both products combined the possibilities of your imagination is endless.

3D printing and scanning works very well for artists, designers, engineers, educators, and hobbyists looking to add to their career or embark on a new on one.  These devices prices range from $699 to $3999 retail for 3D printers and $379 + for 3D scanners.   Soon you will see them in every home for family use so get yours and begin building!

Grammy Award-winning Violinist Miri Ben-Ari Pays Tribute To Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with “Symphony Of Brotherhood”

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, Grammy award-winning violinist, Miri Ben-Ari pays tribute to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with her hit single “Symphony of Brotherhood”.

YouTube Preview Image Ben-Ari composed and produced “Symphony of Brotherhood” after visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta a decade ago. She was deeply touched by the message and legacy of MLK Jr. commenting, “Growing up in Israel as a third generation to Holocaust Survivors and visiting the site inspired me to use one of my original compositions as a soundtrack for the timeless “I Have A Dream” speech from the march on Washington in August 281963.

My experience taught me how important it is, especially in today’s society, to fight against racism and discrimination and music can deliver the message of social justice in a very powerful way.” “Symphony of Brotherhood” features Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech weaving in and out with Ben-Ari’s unique music production, replacing the R&B lead vocalist with her solo violin and string arrangements fill in as the church choir.

The gorgeous track was the first instrumental single ever to appear on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop charts where it spent 12 weeks in the Top 10 peaking at the number 2 position.  It went on to become the first instrumental video to air on MTV and VH1 and was also featured in a Viacom commercial for the “Dream Concert” at Radio City Hall in New York City. In 2008 Ben-Ari was invited to perform “Symphony of Brotherhood” at the President House in Jerusalem, Israel and to be honored with the “Martin Luther King Award” by Israeli President, Shimon Peres.

In 2011, Ben-Ari was invited by America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama to the White House for a special performance of this song and to be honored as a “Remarkable Woman”. Miri Ben-Ari, originally from Israel, has a strong connection to the song’s message. Being a third generation to Holocaust survivors, she co-founded “Gedenk”, a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to educate, raise awareness and encourage self-expression among youth about Anti-Semitism, racism and their brutal consequences. This year Ben-Ari has partnered on behalf of “Gedenk” with “Scholastic Arts & Writing to launch the second year of the “Gedenk Award for Tolerance” campaign.

DJ Premier Closes One Chapter and Begins Another as he moves from The Legendary D&D Studios

As DJ Premier finishes all the last minute tasks, taking down the soundproofing, in-wall speakers and moving the last bit of his equipment, furniture and hundreds of vinyl records, it’s certainly a hectic time in his life—but it does not mean there isn’t time to reflect on one of the cornerstones of his legacy.

On January 7th, 2015, after nearly twenty-five years, the iconic D&D Studios on the fourth floor of 320 West 37th Street shut its doors. Premier first set up shop at D&D in 1991 to record Gang Starr’s third album, Daily Operation, and ever since it has been both a home and a conduit for artists of all genre’s to attach their lyrics to Preemo’s complex rhythm of the streets.

There have been innumerable sessions with hundreds of established and emerging artists, a veritable slew of classic recordings and even more stories created at D&D Studios, as Premier set up camp to put his stamp on timeless music from Gang Starr, Rakim, KRS-One, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Nas, Christina Aguilera, D’Angelo, Janet Jackson, Mos Def, Common, Jeru The Damaja, Bumpy Knuckles, The Game, M.O.P., Snoop Dogg, Cee-Lo, Mac Miller, Kanye West, Slaughterhouse, Mack Wilds and many more, to his recently released collaborative project, PRhyme, with Royce Da 5’9″, to still unheard and recent recordings with Miguel, Wale, Scarface, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes and Joey Bada$$; all of which were birthed at the legendary Studio.

Twelve years after Premier first set foot in D&D, he bought the studio from its founders, Douglas Grama and David Lotwin, in 2003 and renamed it ‘HeadQcourterz’ after his late friend Kenneth “HeadQcourterz” Walker.  While Premier knows the end of D&D closes the book on a major chapter of Hip-Hop history, he also realizes it’s the start of a new phase of his career.  “The building was sold in order to change it from commercial business to residential and our leases would not be renewed, so basically that means Everybody Out!  It is tough to accept after so many years making that much history there, but life is good and I will continue to make hot music.  Passion never leaves your soul and I have a lot of it so I’m ready to continue on.” says Premier.

With Premier’s relocation of the “HeadQcourterz” to KAS Music And Sound at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Astoria complete, the three-time Grammy Award winner pushes ahead with an active label (Year Round Records), which Premier will release his debut album, Last Session @320, on in 2015 (a debut album that includes major guest stars) his independent album projects (NYGzMC EihtLady Of Rage, Khaleel) and begin to heavily focus on stepping into the film and television scoring worlds and use the new “HeadQcourterz” live space to work on a large live show, replete with his own band to tour and play his greatest hits—with so many hits to choose from, the hard part will be coming up with a set list!

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Writer: Paul Thomas Anderson

Based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon

Producers: Joanne Sellar, Daniel Lupi, Paul Thomas Anderson

Executive Producers: Scott Rudin, Adam Somner

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Joanna Newsom

“Inherent Vice,” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

The film stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master,” “Walk the Line”), Josh Brolin (“True Grit,” “No Country For Old Men”) and Owen Wilson (“The Royal Tennenbaums,” “Midnight in Paris”); Katherine Waterston (“Michael Clayton,” “Boardwalk Empire”); Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) and Benicio Del Toro (“Traffic”); Martin Short (“Frankenweenie”); Jena Malone (“The Hunger Games” series); and musician Joanna Newsom.

Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will Be Blood,” “The Master”) directed “Inherent Vice” from a screenplay he wrote based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon. Anderson also produced the film, together with Oscar-nominated producers JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi (“There Will Be Blood”). Scott Rudin and Adam Somner served as executive producers.

Anderson’s behind-the-scenes creative team included Oscar-winning director of photography Robert Elswit (“There Will Be Blood”), production designer David Crank (“The Master”), Oscar-nominated editor Leslie Jones (“The Thin Red Line”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (“The Artist”). The music is by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with IAC Films, a JoAnne Sellar/Ghoulardi Film Company production, “Inherent Vice.” Opening in limited release on December 12, 2014 and expanding on January 9, 2015, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

“Inherent Vice” has been rated R for drug use throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some violence.
