This summer, bust out your best polyester pants suit because Black Dynamite and his crew are about to explode onto the scene in all-new Blu-ray and DVD release, Black Dynamite Season OneThe inaugural home entertainment release from the top-rated Adult Swim series will be available to own on July 15, 2014. Featuring all ten 30-minute episodes from the series’ first season, the Blu-ray and DVD release also contains a host of bonus content including the original pilot, a behind-the-scenes featurette and video commentaries with series creator Carl Jones (The Boondocks) and cast members. Black Dynamite Season One will be available for the suggested retail price of $39.99 on Blu-ray and $29.98 on two-disc DVD set, with a retailer pre-order date of June 10.

The series’ titular character Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White) is a 1970s renaissance man with a kung-fu grip. He is a lover and a fighter who is not afraid to leap before he looks. His sidekick extraordinaire is Bullhorn, the brains and cunning that complements Black Dynamite’s hard-hittin’, bone-crushin’ style. Providing comic relief on the mean streets is Cream Corn (Tommy Davidson) and classing up the place is the gorgeous Honey Bee (Kym Whitley).

Based on 2009’s critically-acclaimed feature film, the Black Dynamite animated series further chronicles the exploits of the central character and his crew. Under the direction of Carl Jones, the series features the voice talent of Michael Jai White (For Better or Worse, The Dark Knight, Why Did I Get Married?), Tommy Davidson (In Living Color, Bamboozled), Kym Whitley (The Cleveland Show, Brian McKnight Show), and Byron Minns (Mongo Wrestling Alliance), all of whom starred in the feature film. The animated series is produced by Ars Nova, with Jon Steingart, Carl Jones, and Jillian Apfelbaum as executive producers. Brian Ash is co-executive producer. Scott Sanders, Michael Jai White and Byron Minns are producers. Monica Jones is associate producer. Lesean Thomas is creative producer/supervising director. Original music is provided by Adrian Younge. Black Dynamite is being animated by Titmouse, Inc.

The series’ first season, which aired on Adult Swim during the summer of 2012, was the top-rated show in its timeslot for both adults and men 18-34, with more than five million adults and three million men tuning in to get a piece of Black Dynamite, according to Nielsen Media Research. The second season of the series will debut this summer on Adult Swim.

Unique Summer Program Brings Together Youth with Outstanding Artists and Music Industry Professionals

The GRAMMY Foundation® announced that 167 talented high school students from 125 U.S. cities and 31 U.S. states have been selected as participants in the 10th annual GRAMMY Camp® program. Additionally, through a partnership with Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry, six international students from China, Japan and England will attend GRAMMY Camp in Los Angeles, bringing the total number of students attending all four of this year’s GRAMMY Camps to 173.

The Foundation’s signature music industry camp for U.S. high school students will be held in Nashville, St. Paul, Los Angeles & New York. This GRAMMY in the Schools® program is supported by Converse and Journeys. Additional program support is provided by Davey Silverman, the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, the RBC Foundation USA, and other individual donors.

“The GRAMMY Foundation’s GRAMMY Camp has become our signature program that provides young people with an extraordinarily in-depth experience, giving them a genuine sense of what it’s like to have a career in the music industry,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy® and the GRAMMY Foundation. “Each and every GRAMMY Camper benefits from this program and takes with them valuable lessons learned as they continue their music journeys.”

Applications for GRAMMY Camp 2015 are currently online at and the deadline is March 31, 2015. Financial aid is available and approximately 80 percent of GRAMMY Camp participants who have applied for financial aid have received assistance.

“Ten years ago, when GRAMMY Camp began, we could not have imagined how this program would have grown and how the students who participate would have thrived from the experience,” said Kristen Madsen, Senior Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation. “The program and the campers have exceeded all of our expectations and we are looking forward to what the next decade will bring.”

Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival 2014: We Made It!

A decade ago the good folks at Brooklyn Bodega created the first Hip Hop Festival in Brooklyn. Throughout the years they’ve had headliners from all over the city like Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, Q-Tip, Pharoahe Monch and De La Soul. For the 10 year anniversary the Bodega wanted to do it big, so they went and stacked the deck with some old favorites alongside some new talent.

Early on festival goers were treated to the likes of previous headliners like Brand Nubian to set the tone of the day. G.O.O.D Music artist from Atlanta CyHi The Prince took the stage to promote his aggressive mixtape Histori: Black History Project. Next was the performance that would change the game for the BHF.

Jay Electronica, a man who continues to confuse the hip hop world with his words and actions whether on twitter or on the blogs, was next to take the stage. He arrived in full F.O.I (Fruit of Islam) garb with a detail from the Nation in tow to ensure his protection. Throughout his performance he shared the stage with Mac Miller (who forgot his verse), Talib Kweli and fellow Roc Nation artist J Cole. But it was the captain of the ship who created pandemonium at the festival. After having everyone in attendance throw their diamond in the sky, Jay Elec called out Jay Z. Jay took the stage to his version of Big Daddy Kane’s Young Gifted and Black. After that the two Jay’s went right into their remake of We Made It complete with Five Percenter jargon and Drake shade. It was a beautiful moment. One that was pretty impossible to follow, but someone had to go on next.

CJ Fly took the stage with his band and did his best to entertain a crowd that just got finished rapping along to Jay Z’s PSA with the man himself. A difficult task indeed. He did a pretty good job actually with his small band. It was a nice look for the Pro Era emcee.

Next to the stage was the other headliner…you know the guy from Wu-Tang. Raekwon the Chef came out in a CLEAN pair of kicks and took the crowd through a journey of Wu songs plus his solo stuff. Rae had no problem rapping his brother’s verses in their absence which made for a fun show. Being a man who likes to share, Rae brought out only Brooklyn emcees like Masta Killa (Glaciers of Ice is still amazing), Lil Fame from MOP, AZ, online sensation Bobby Shmurda (a HUGE surprise) and Papoose (which I have to say the crowd kinda went crazy for). It was a little awkward when Rae didn’t really get to end his set, and instead Pap ended it for him with a free Remy chant. How in the hell do you follow that in year 11. A good problem to have I say.

NAS signs west coast rapper FASHAWN to Mass Appeal Label

Fashawn to Release The Ecology this Fall 

West coast rapper Fashawn has officially inked a deal with Nas’ newly launched Mass Appeal imprint. Fashawn is now working on his long-awaited sophomore album, The Ecology, set to release on September 30.

Fashawn first gained major attention in 2009 for the release of his debut album Boy Meets World. This early success led him to be inaugurated into the 2010 XXL Freshmen cover, standing alongside Wiz Khalifa, J.Cole, Big Sean and more. His buzz has gotten increasingly stronger, from sharing the stage with notable stars such as Kendrick Lamar, Talib Kweli, Wiz Khalifa to performing at jam-packed shows like Rock the Bells and Paid Dues. He also performed the entrance theme song for boxing welterweight champion Timothy Bradley when he fought his rematch against Manny Pacquiao on Pay Per View last April.

Fashawn’s distinctive talent captured the attention of Nas, who brought him out during a sold-out showcase at SXSW earlier this year.

“Fashawn is one of the most underrated in the game,” said Nas. “The world is gonna know soon. We’re excited to have him as a part of the family.”

The Ecology will be Fashawn’s first release under the Mass Appeal imprint. This album will not only showcase his raw lyricism but also introduce his versatility. The Ecology will feature a handful of collaborations including Nas, Aloe Blacc and many more.

“I took the time to really work on this project because I knew it would be important not just for my career, but for hip-hop,” said Fashawn. “I can’t wait to finally share my new project, especially through a label that gets my vision.”
