Thundercat, La Santa Cecilia, Moses Sumney, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson @ San Jose Jazz’s Winter Fest 2014 (Feb. 28 – March 2)

Winter Fest 2014 Logo

San Jose Jazz Winter Fest, Feb 28-Mar 2, presents emerging artists that are blurring genres, breaking new ground and moving the art form forward. Featured this year are musicians that are blowing up in LA’s thriving live music scene: Thundercat, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Moses Sumney.

Bassist/songwriter/vocalist Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat, has music deeply rooted within. Music runs deep in his blood—his father, Ronald Bruner, Sr., is an internationally known jazz drummer, and Steven started his career in high school, touring with his brother in the punk band Suicidal Tendencies.

As Thundercat, Bruner works with a mix of artists that suit his wildly experimental sensibilities – anyone ranging from Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, and Stanley Clarke to more recent collaborations with rappers Wiz Khalifa and Earl Sweatshirt. FlyLo is the executive producer of Thundercat’s latest album, Apocalypse. The album blurs the confines of pop, funk, electronica and prog rock to create something entirely new.

Multi-instrumentalist/composer/producer/DJ Miguel Atwood-Ferguson has contributed to over 300 recordings and countless live concerts. As a violist, he has appeared with Big Boi (Outkast), Rihanna, Hall & Oates, and many other international artists. In orchestral settings, Atwood-Ferguson has joined the likes of Esa-Pekka Salonen and Michael Tilson Thomas. As a studio musician, he has recorded for, Dr. Dre, Flying Lotus and Raphael Saadiq and he’s been a featured performer on the internationally acclaimed BBC Radio 1 program “Worldwide” in London hosted by Gilles Peterson. Atwood-Ferguson will be joined by Oakland vocalist Mara Hruby whose recent EP From Her Eyes has received a lot of notice.

With just a guitar, a looping station, and his voice, Moses Sumney has quickly become one of 2014’s hottest emerging artists. LA Weekly raved “the soulful singer has an entire band residing within his throat.” Timeout LA noted Sumney is a “mix of D’Angelo, Elliott Smith, and Active Child,” and Buzzbands LA referred to his sound as “evocative folk-soul” and observed that “no artist in recent memory has gone from zero to must-see more quickly than Sumney.”

Winter Fest also presents alternative Latin powerhouse La Santa Cecilia, who just won a 2014 Grammy; saxophone hotshot Anton Schwartz with his quintet, including young talent Taylor Eigsti; blues/soul diva Nikki Hill; hot zydeco band Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys; straight ahead pianist, composer and bandleader Amina Figarova and more. Pharoahe Monch To Release New LP “P.T.S.D.” On 4-15-14

Pharoahe Monch To Release “P.T.S.D.” With Guest Appearances From Black Thought, Talib Kweli, dEnAuN, The Stepkids, Vernon Reid & Production From Lee Stone, Marco Polo, Jesse West, The Lion Share & Quelle Chris

“P.T.S.D.” (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) will be released on 4-15-14

With his highly-anticipated fourth solo-LP, “P.T.S.D.” (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Pharoahe Monch re-emerges with a new concept project which finds the ground-breaking emcee tackling PTSD; a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma. Throughout the duration of the LP, Monch narrates as an independent artist weary from the war against the industry machine and through the struggle of the black male experience in America.

When Eminem recently name-dropped him (“But I still rap like I’m on my Pharoahe Monch grind”) on his “Rap God” single it was for good reason.; as Pharoahe Monch has been at the forefront of lyrical innovation for two-decades now.  Not only is he one of Hip-Hop’s preeminent lyricists, crafting intricate rhyme schemes and intelligent raps, but he is also an incisive political and social commentator, using Hip-Hop as a platform for political engagement as his “Bullet” trilogy hauntingly speaks to audiences in the same dark personification of a bullet.

The first installment of the “Bullet” trilogy was introduced by Pharoahe in the seminal song “Stray Bullet” with Organized Konfusion via theStress: The Extinction Agenda LP in 1994. The second installment came via his 2007 solo-LP, Desire, on the Mr. Porter produced “When The Gun Draws”. Socially prophetic and politically relevant,“Damage” from the upcoming PTSD (which drew rave reviews from Pitchfork, Complex, RapRadar, Vibe, MTV etc) continues to chronicle the tragedy of inner city killings and mass murder.

Although it was penned before the Dark Knight Theater massacre in Colorado and the Newtown School shootings, the song relevantly accentuates the obvious ongoing gun issue in our society and provides a chilling reminder that bullets have no name. Similarly, a then rough-version of Monch’s protest song, “Stand Your Ground,” was released immediately at Monch’s insistence after the Trayvon Martin verdict was announced and added more discourse on the polarizing debates about racial profiling, civil rights and the inadequacies of the justice system.  Monch’s social commentary was subsequently profiled by MTV, Vibe, Huffington Post, AOL, BET, Ebony and LA Times.

While Monch is not afraid to tackle the tough topics, the diversity you come to expect from Monch abounds on P.T.S.D., as he is quick to remind everyone that he’s still a “Top 5” emcee on recently released “Bad M.F.” and “Rapid Eye Movement” as he and Black Thought get lucid for a 4-minute exhibition of pure lyricism.  Further, Monch addresses the struggle of the hood on “The Jungle” “sometimes we all feel fenced in” and the haunting isolation of addiction on “Broken Again” and the LP’s title track swiftly brings you back to the overall concept of the LP “F*ck you know about struggle/the boy in the plastic bubble/when I drink away the pain I guzzle/my life is like a complicated mathematical puzzle.”

Monch’s longtime collaborator, Lee Stone, returns to the fold to produce four tracks; including “Dream” f/ Talib Kweli and Marco Polo who reunited Monch and Prince Po for a new Organized Konfusion track (“3-O-Clock”) from his recently released project, chips in three tracks as well.  Monch also links up with Mello Music Group’s rising upstart, Quelle Chris, on “Scream.”  Further displaying his versatility, Monch collaborates with The Stepkids (Stones Throw Records) on “Eht Dnarg Noisulli.”

In related news, Pharoahe Monch is currently on tour in Europe an is planning a full US tour to support PTSD in the spring, check  for tour and album updates.

INDIGOGO: Undeniable – The Story of The Independent Soul Music Movement

title image

Coined everything from “Indie Soul” to the “Honest Music Movement,” “Undeniable – The Story Of The Independent Soul Music Movement” traces the heretofore untold stories of artists and music lovers right from its late 1990s origins through the halcyon days of the mid-2000s to the lawless rule of today where throughout the collective goal is still to develop, maintain, and grow a space in the global cultural landscape for this multi-tentacle brand of “honest music.”

In candid, digitally shot, in-person interviews with those who were there and those pressing the movement forward against impossible odds, “Undeniable” introduces a range of talented “newcomers” to the mainstream film-going audience. Director John C. Jointer uncovers former A-list veterans who found a second life through these new technologically driven models after being told they were too old or not the new major label prototype for the successful international pop star.

“Undeniable” plans to juxtapose the plight of fresh young musicians who’ve never had a major label deal as well as those who were signed, shelved, but never saw an album release with those veterans now being represented by large independent labels like eOne, Malaco, Shanachie, and Stax/Concord, or at small indies like Dome, Stones Throw, Giant Step, and Purpose Music Group. Their range in entering these new music identities complicating who gets to authentically call themselves an “indie artist” in a game where credibility is as elusive as it is key.

“Undeniable – The Story Of The Independent Soul Music Movement” needs to raise $50,000 in order for us to bring the story of these amazing artists and their music to the world.

We have put together a wonderful package of perks for our supporters, from a personal “shout-out” on our website and social media pages, to film merch swag, to an Associate or Executive producer credit in the film!!
