Chicago producer launches “We Are One” music project to unite city, spur action

Chicago producer launches “We Are One” music project to unite city, spur action

Song, video aim to motivate new volunteers, attract resources for youth-serving organizations

November 18, 2013 (CHICAGO)—After the violent death of his young son’s friend earlier this year, Chicago house music producer and DJ Terry Hunter  wanted to do something to not only express his grief and frustration, but to inspire people to act together for change. He’s hoping that the result, a new track, entitled “We Are One”, featuring “Slique” Jay Adams, becomes an anthem and a movement that improves communities.

Hunter will release the song via his T’s Box Records label on Traxsource, iTunes. We Are One will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to organizations working with youth and those affected by violence, including Kids Off the BlockChicago’s Citizens for Change and the Hadiya Pendleton Foundation. Hunter also is working to build relationships and partnerships between the organizations, local businesses and prospective volunteers.

“My hope is that ‘We Are One’ gets people moving, and gets them thinking about what’s happening in Chicago,” says Hunter. “More importantly, I hope it inspires them to translate their feelings into positive action in our neighborhoods.”

Hunter is using his music industry contacts to drum up support of the project, asking local artists and businesses to donate volunteer time and financial resources to its charitable partners. He’s also tapped into his networks to produce a video featuring Chicago youth, artists and celebrities. The video will premiere at a reception later this month, and Hunter is planning additional events to raise awareness of the project and link individuals with opportunities to give in their communities.

About DJ Terry Hunter

Born and raised in Chicago, DJ and producer Terry Hunter was introduced to music by his father, a DJ who played mostly soul and disco music at a west side tavern. Terry got his first big DJ break while still a teenager, and in 1990, as the Chicago house music sound was exploding internationally, he produced his first release, “Madness”, which became an underground hit. Since then, Terry has contributed production talents to remixes for top artists, including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Byron Stingily (of Chicago’s Ten City), Barbara Tucker, La India, Mary J. Blige and R. Kelly. In 2004, Terry launched his own label, T’s Box Records, to develop and produce the next generation of house music talent. In 2006, he became the first new member of Chicago’s Chosen Few DJs in nearly 30 years. In 2007, Terry released a global dance classic, “Wonderful” featuring Chicago songstress Terisa Griffin, and followed that with a well-received remix of Marshall Jefferson’s house music anthem, “Move Your Body” and a hit remix of Avery Sunshine’s “Ugly Part Of Me”. Terry also keeps busy with a successful residency, Bang! Sundays at Chicago’s The Shrine nightclub and maintains a hectic international touring schedule.

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings are set to return to the road for a full North American tour this Spring. This is the band’s first full US tour in over two years. The tour kicks off with a hometown show at New York’s Beacon Theatre on February 6. Special fan pre-sale begins November 12th on the band’s website while standard ticketing begins Friday November 15th.

In the meantime, fans can cheer for Sharon and the Dap-Kings as they perform on a float in the 87thannual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which will be televised nationally on NBC. More info here.

In looking forward to performing on Thanksgiving, Sharon Jones recollected, “Getting to take part in this parade is so thrilling; I’ve been watching it on television since I was a young girl.” She added, “I have traveled a hard road this year and being thankful is something I relate to deeply,” says Jones.

For the uninitiated, 2013 has become a year of unforeseen challenges and transformations for the band. Three months before the original scheduled release of the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio record,Give The People What They Want, Sharon Jones was diagnosed with cancer.

What was projected to be a hectic and exciting year touring worldwide was quickly taken over by hospital rooms, doctors, and many unknowns. At 57, Jones has lived through her fair share of hardships and heartbreak, but being separated from the stage and her fans would prove to be the most difficult challenge yet.

Thanks to an extremely gifted medical staff, several months of recovery and the infinite love and support from friends, family and fans, Sharon is back, ready to once again join her Dap-Kings as they share their music with people around the globe.

Give The People What They Want now seems an even more appropriate title for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ coming release. After more than a decade of nearly constant recording, collaborating and touring as one of the most formidable and consequential lives acts performing today, they know what their audience wants from them.
