Selan presents SPACE FLIGHT, the album featuring Nile Rodgers, Ali Shaheed, M1 of Dead Prez, Emily King & more
“Selan is a true genius.”
- Louie Vega, Grammy-winning producer & remixer
“Selan’s singing comes from the heart…you feel every ounce of soul, every smidgen of emotion. He’s a great talent.”
-DJ Spinna, hip-hop producer & remixer
“The choices Selan is making as a young musician separate him from “the norm” and keep him reaching for a place we should all reach for…..the pursuit of the very best of us.”
-Leon Ware, singer/songwriter/producer (Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Maxwell)
Selan is a unique and rare type of talent. He possesses perfect pitch and has an eidetic memory (or photographic memory) for music. Raised in Queens, NY to a Trinidadian mother and Jewish-American father, Selan is a self-taught pianist since the age of 3. He eventually entered the music industry by means of doing recording sessions and backing up recording artists on tour and on TV. Here are a few notable artists he’s worked with:
Adele, Sting, Alejandro Sanz, Louie Vega, Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, DJ Spinna, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Roy Ayers, Kanye West, Rihanna, Pink, Miley Cyrus, Guru (Gangstarr), Amel Larrieux
Highlights from his career as a sideman:
-The 2009 Grammy Awards performance with Adele
-Played keyboards on the 2006 Grammy-winning remix for Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” (Louie Vega remix)
-Co-writer for “Focus” on Ashanti’s platinum-selling album, “Concrete Rose”
-Co-writer for the house music hit “Lean On Me” (MAW feat. James Ingram)
Since 2009, Selan has been touring the world as a keyboardist/vocalist with the classic disco group, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers. In 2013, Nile Rodgers has rightfully claimed the top of the charts thanks to his work on Daft Punk’s album “Random Access Memories”, propelling Chic into the limelight by performing on Europe’s biggest festivals and TV networks (Glastonbury, Hyde Park, BBC, Canal+TV, RTE Television).
The natural evolution of Selan’s career has lead him to that of becoming a solo artist. His debut album, “Space Flight” features Nile Rodgers, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, M1 of Dead Prez, Emily King and Melissa Jimenez. Selan wrote, composed, produced and performed virtually all of the songs, causing many people to label him an auteur.
The first single, “Space Flight” is an uptempo track driven by an infectious beat, layered synthesizers and a rhythmic pizzicato string part that truly takes you on a flight.
“Why Did You Hurt Me” features the undeniable rhythm guitar of the iconic Nile Rodgers, along with enough heavy, funky synth parts to pull you to the dance floor. “You Will Never Know” is a duet that showcases the beautiful voice of Melissa Jimenez, who has been a featured vocalist with Wyclef Jean and The Kumbia All-Starz. The folk-style arpeggiated guitars lay the foundation here while a pulsating backbeat accompanied by lush strings and expressive synths complement Selan’s most heartfelt vocal delivery to date. The entire album is an unfolding story that carries you through space and time.
You are cordially invited to take a “Space Flight” on a journey that began in New York City and now transcends far into deep space.
