KICKSTARTER: DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK, a film by Bobbito Garcia & Kevin Couliau

Exploring the culture and social impact of New York’s basketball scene

Hello! Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love and Kevin Couliau here. We co-directed the doc DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: PICK-UP BASKETBALL, NYC and produced/finished the project with our own funds, completely DIY status. This is the first film either of us have ever made.

Since the summer of 2012, we’ve screened it at various festivals and outdoor community events throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Our highlight was winning the Audience Award for Best Feature at the Urbanworld Film Festival in September!

Our next step is to do an independent commercial release this spring 2013, but we need your involvement! Whatever funds you contribute will help us pay for:

-remaining music license fees

-the costs to create/market/promote/advertise our own theatrical bookings

-production costs for DVD/Blu-Ray mastering/manufacturing

We have some great rewards to offer! We appreciate whatever you can contribute, whether it’s $5 or $5,000. Every little bit counts, thanks!

Here’s what some important audience members have said about our film after seeing it:

“Beautifully depicted . . . evokes passion that anyone who has ever played may savor.”

Ira Berkow, former New York Times sports columnist

“I urge everyone to watch this film. If you can, bring a ball with you. As your date.”

Rick Telander, Sports Illustrated writer and Heaven Is A Playground author

“ . . . one of those rare documentaries which reveal a vital underground phenomenon with exuberance, humor and love.”

Henry Chalfant, legendary Style Wars film producer

“. . . a triumph capturing a culture of champions without medallions.”

Michaela Angela Davis, writer/image activist, BET Network

“Certified classic!”

Fab Five Freddy, former host of YO! MTV Raps television series

“A first of its kind film!”

6th Annual Roots Picnic Line-Up & Date Announced

Starring: The Roots, Gary Clark Jr., Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Grimes, Naughty By Nature (backed by The Roots), araabMUZIK, DJ Premier, Solange, Trinidad Jame$, The Gaslamp Killer, Hit-Boy, How to Dress Well, Joey Bada$$, Robert Glasper, Sonnymoon, Lushlife, Jennah Bell & more

The legendary Roots crew announced their annual ROOTS PICNIC is returning to Philadelphia’s Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing on Saturday, June 1st. The festival is celebrating its sixth year with an eclectic lineup over two stages that Roots Picnic fans have come to expect – boasting performances by: Gary Clark Jr., Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and a show-stopping set with Naughty By Nature backed by The Roots. Philadelphia sons, The Roots, are the hardest working band in music.

The Grammy winners continue to be at the top of their game through the mastery of live hip-hop, ingenious lyricism and eclectic collaborations. Their unique style simply goes unmatched in the studio and on stage. They are also one of the busiest bands around, and when they’re not performing or in the studio, The Roots can be seen every week night as the house band on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”.

Gary Clark Jr. has swagger.  The guitar virtuoso, whose roots run deep in blues, jazz, soul, country and hip-hop influences, has taken 2012 by storm and continues to amaze in 2013. Clark is a spotlight act at festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza – and can now add performing at The Roots Picnic to his growing list of accolades. His hit “Bright Lights,” along with his album Blak and Blu, perfectly showcase his smooth vocal style and the poise of a veteran musician at only 28 years old.

Seattle duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is making serious waves in the hip-hop word with their electrifying live shows, skillfully blended music and innovative music videos. In support of their debut full-length album The Heist, they embarked on a completely sold-out 70-city tour and saw the album fly to the very top of the iTunes and Billboard charts. Hip-hop vets, Naughty By Nature, have smashed through mainstream barriers while still remaining true to their roots in rap.

Their 20+ years in music has earned the trio the titles of Grammy Award winners and platinum-album selling artists. Since their self-title debut album in 1991, Naughty By Nature quickly assaulted the charts with their No. 1 hit “O.P.P.” Since then, these three “Kings of The HipHop Anthem” have remained a large part of the American hip-hop legacy. Last year’s Roots Picnic was a sold-out success! Among the highlights were performances by Rakim (performing Paid In Full) and De La Soul – both backed by The Roots – and James Murphy’s fiery DJ set, just to name a few.

This year will again bring the eclectic flavor of the best that music has to offer. In previous years, performers at The Roots Picnic have included: The Black Keys, John Legend, members of Wu Tang Clan, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend, Public Enemy, Santigold, Gnarls Barkley, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Nas and many more. Tickets go on sale this Friday, January 25 at 10am and will be available at, Live Nation Box Office (111 Presidential Blvd, Bala Cynwyd), TLA (334 South St., Philadelphia/ Service-charge-free) or by-phone at 800-745-3000

No Beginning No End is a seamless musical experience that moves between different styles with remarkable fluidity, bound together by James’ transcendent voice. Conceived, recorded and produced independently, the album is James’ most personal statement yet and boasts collaborators including noted producer/bassist Pino Palladino; pianist/composer Robert Glasper; R&B singer/songwriter/guitarist Emily King; international French-Moroccan singing star Hindi Zahra; and the Thelonious Monk Competition winner pianist Kris Bowers.

No Beginning No End sums up how I feel about music right now,” says James. “I don’t want to be confined to any particular style. I decided I didn’t want to be considered a jazz singer anymore and that was really freeing. Once I realized that jazz singing is just something that I do and it’s just a label, it freed me as an artist to just write without any boundaries.”

The Minneapolis-born, Brooklyn-based James is a musical omnivore whose career path has steadfastly followed its own rhyme and reason. He is an artist that resists being pigeonholed, equally at ease on stage with a jazz legend like McCoy Tyner as he is in the studio with electronica pioneer Flying Lotus. Interview Magazine recently named José one of their 13 Faces of 2013, declaring him “The New Jazz Man” and praising his efforts to reconnect hip hop with jazz.

Following his breakout national TV debut on Conan, José brought “Trouble” to the set of the Late Show with David Letterman. “Trouble” is the lead single from José’s stunning Blue Note debut No Beginning No End, which NPR Music premiered as part of their First Listen series.

The influential Los Angeles radio station KCRW has also posted José’s performance of “Trouble” from their Berkeley Street Sessions as a teaser for the full concert that they recorded at Apogee’s Berkeley Street Studio last month. The session will air January 24 on Morning Becomes Eclectic. The Los Angeles Times was at the taping and called it “one of L.A.’s best concerts of the year,” adding that No Beginning No End is “a palette-stretching career high-water mark for the singer-songwriter.”

The Times went on to call James a “genre hybridist who claims both b-boys and jazz purists in his fan base,” and raved that the show was “a powerful reminder of the power – artistic and spiritual – of music that is not canned, that is not rigidly programmed to merely re-create studio sounds… the elder statesman gravitas of his voice, coupled with his amiable ’round-the-way demeanor make him a winningly singular presence in contemporary American music. Not just singular, but magnetic.”

Following the release of No Beginning No End, José will kick off a short U.S. tour January 23 in New York City with an album release show at the Highline Ballroom. Other stops along the first leg will include Washington DC, Boston, Chicago and Minneapolis. After a month-long tour in Asia and Australia throughout February, James will be returning to the U.S. in March for a run of West Coast dates that includes San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, and a Los Angeles show at The Del Monte Speakeasy on March 12.

Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; Newark,
NJ; Boston, MA and Robert Battle’s hometown Miami, FL, among many

Artistic Director Robert Battle continues to surprise and delight
audiences with premieres and new productions that expand his vision for
the company, adding dynamic choreographic voices to the repertory that
give Ailey’s extraordinary artists new ways to inspire.

Another Night, by rising young choreographer Kyle Abraham, innovatively
fuses the many dynamic facets of American dance and showcases the
artistry and versatility of the Ailey dancers. Set to Art Blakey & The
Jazz Messenger’s rendition of one of Dizzy Gillespie’s seminal
compositions, A Night in Tunisia, the world premiere for ten dancers
was created with the support of commissioning funds from New York City
Center and the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth, in celebration
of the Center’s 50th Anniversary.

Petite Mort, a ballet of breathtaking sensuality and visual surprises,
marks the first time a work by renowned European choreographer
Jiří Kylián appears in the Ailey repertory. Set to
two of Mozart’s most popular piano concertos, the theatrical work
blends a classical sensibility with a bold, modern wit with fencing
foils and elaborate ball gowns in an unforgettable duel featuring six

From Before beautifully blends the rhythms of African dance with
Caribbean influences, with movements distilled to their purest form by
Garth Fagan, the Tony Award-winning choreographer of The Lion King.
Featuring a jazzy percussive score by Grammy winner Ralph MacDonald,
the Ailey premiere marks the first staging of this revered work for a
company other than Garth Fagan Dance.

Artistic Director Robert Battle’s Strange Humors is a thrillingly
intense duet, set to John Mackey’s propulsive score for strings and
African drum that pits two men against each other. Surprising sequences
ignite with aggression and discord, mischievousness and humor, as the
relationship between the two dancers builds to an exciting crescendo.

Ronald K. Brown’s landmark work Grace, created for Alvin Ailey American
Dance Theater in 1999, has returned to the repertory in a rapturous,
spiritually-charged new production. Infused with Brown’s signature
blend of modern dance and West African idioms, this moving journey
acknowledging the grace that surrounds us all is set to Duke
Ellington’s classic “Come Sunday,” Roy Davis’ hit “Gabriel,” and the
powerful rhythms of Fela Kuti’s Afro-Pop.

A new production of Ailey Classics features a vibrant anthology of
highlights from founder Alvin Ailey’s prolific 30-year career –
including audience favorites and classics such as Cry, Love Songs and
For ‘Bird’ With Love — culminating with his signature masterpiece
Revelations, performed in its entirety.

“I’m thrilled to be further expanding Ailey’s diverse repertory this
season with new voices and talented contemporary choreographers that
showcase the depth and breadth of the dancers’ artistry,” stated
Artistic Director Robert Battle. “Audiences across the country will
have the opportunity to experience these new treasures, along with
encores of last season’s notable works, and a program that highlights
the work of our legendary founder Alvin Ailey

Encore performances from Battle’s acclaimed first season will include
modern dance master Paul Taylor’s Arden Court, hip-hop choreographer
Rennie Harris’ soul-lifting Home, and Ohad Naharin’s unique and
innovative Minus 16, which features improvisation and audience
participation. Also, a variety of repertory favorites and classic Ailey
works will be performed, including the always inspiring must-see
American masterpiece Revelations.

The Ailey Organization will continue its mission of using dance to
educate, inspire and entertain by reaching young people through special
student performances and master classes. Revelations: An
Interdisciplinary Approach curriculum program will be implemented in
public schools in Miami, FL; South Bend, IN; Detroit, MI; Los Angeles,
CA, and Chicago, IL. Utilizing Alvin Ailey’s signature work,
Revelations, the program is an inspirational framework for a
comprehensive study of language arts, social studies, and dance.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater inspires all in a universal
celebration of the human spirit using the African-American cultural
experience and the American modern dance tradition. Having embarked on
an exciting new era guided by Robert Battle’s vision, Ailey’s acclaimed
dancers will reveal once again this season why the Company is beloved
as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World.”
