NEW RELEASE: Idle Warship “Habits of the Heart”

Habits of the Heart November 1, 2011; Blacksmith/Element 9/Fontana

After four years of independently released tracks that spread like wildfire across the web, Idle Warship will release their first official collection of songs entitled Habits of the Heart on November 1st, 2011, via Blacksmith/Element 9/Fontana. The 12-track album has Idle Warship storming the music scene with a bold and indefinable mash-up of influences, from soul to hip-hip to alternative to electronic. Idle Warship brought an incredible range of musical sensibilities into the studio and we’ll venture to say that the output will completely blow your mind.Idle Warship is a perfect example of how a whole can become greater than the sum of its parts – and that is saying quite a lot given the musical components of this project.

A collaboration between longtime friends and collaborators, hip-hop luminary Talib Kweli and critically acclaimed soulful singer and songwriter Res, Idle Warship was born out of sheer experimentation in the studio. But some of the best things in life happen when least expected. When fans of Talib and Res heard and reacted to some online MP3s of what these two had created during their off-the-cuff sessions, it became clear that that something much bigger was brewing. Since making a huge splash at SXSW in 2009 and completing a successful European tour, Idle Warship made Party Robot – their mixtape with master DJ Mick Boogie and singer/songwriter Graph Nobel – available for free download in 2010. It only left the fans craving, and now the wait is over!

With an obvious chemistry, a dedication to free creative expression and now a new album, Talib and Res’ partnership has become a musical force to be reckoned with. Habits of the Heart effortlessly shifts from the rhythmic hand-clapping blast of “Laser Beams” (stream or embed the song here) to the off-kilter futuristic track “Driving Me Insane” to the unbridled, heartfelt piano ballad “Beautifully Bad.” With guest spots from Chester French and John Forte on “Covered in Fantasy,” and Michelle Williams on “Katya,” Habits of The Heart takes you on one thrilling journey.

New York (October 20, 2011) – In celebration of those at the forefront of innovation, Hyundai Motor America customized three Velosters that were revealed at the grand opening of RE:MIX Lab last night, a multi city festival of art, music, fashion, technology, culture and design.  Built to embody Music, Technology and Gaming, each car was a featured masterpiece in the festival’s principle installation, “Exhibits in Collaboration,” at 410 West 16th Street from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.  In the spirit of sharing and discovering new ideas, Hyundai introduced a Youtube channel dedicated to streaming content from future events as the series begins its travels from New York to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago and Miami. Additionally, the evening included live performances by Darryl “DMC” McDanielsHoodie Allen,DJ Neil Armstrong, and Dean & RavoAmerica’s Next Top Model Camille McDonald was also onsite for the reveal.

“The all-new Hyundai Veloster, our exciting three-door sporty coupe designed for just about any adventure drivers can imagine, connects in personality and function with a group that loves music, fashion, gaming and technology,” said Steve Shannon, vice president of marketing, Hyundai Motor America. “The opening of the RE:MIX Lab brings creativity to life by encouraging collaboration across all of these art forms. Whether experiencing the RE:MIX Lab live in person or via our YouTube channel, we believe this audience will identify with and appreciate the blend of all these creative outlets.”

Beyond the matte black exterior, black-smoked taillights, and custom black suede and vinyl interior, the Music Veloster is a rock star’s dream. The car boasts a Fender Stratocaster guitar and Vox stainless amp for rock fans, plus a world-class DJ setup in the rear hatch with a Numark NS6 DJ controller, customized black and red 15” Macbook Pro with Serato, three JL Audio Amps that appear to be floating in mid-air, and two iPads in a slide-out hidden drawer with mixing software, making this one-of-a-kind car a revolution in harmony. Similarly, the Technology Veloster is equipped with state-of-the-art devices from some of the leading names in the industry, including Apple, Samsung, LG, Panasonic. The glowing white Technology Veloster delivers an unparalleled 3D experience with a 40” 3D LCD TV, 3D Blu-Ray player and 3D camcorder letting people see themselves rendered in a new dimension. And finally, designed to elicit envy, the Gaming Veloster is appropriately green with black accents, custom body kit, carbon fiber trim and Sparco race seats.  The rear hatch of the Gaming Veloster is equipped with a 40” TV that is connected to both Kinect and Xbox 360, with a high-speed internet connection supporting Xbox Live, plus additional consoles allowing eight players to simultaneously game in and around the car.

Though inspired by three specific genres, each Veloster is the ultimate example of collaboration with elements of art, music, fashion, technology and design.  To further exemplify the ubiquitous role that collaboration has played in the lives of consumers, H360, the experiential marketing division of Harris Publications, has created a truly memorable experience at the RE:MIX LAB, a travelling culture festival and gallery installation which serves as the backdrop for the custom Velosters. Ben Harris, Chief Operating Officer remarked, “We needed to create something that embodies the spirit of these cars but also make it compelling enough for all the hypebeasts’ out there to participate. No one has stopped to provide a truly editorial retrospective of the space”. He adds, “ We jumped at the opportunity to curate an ‘Exhibit In Collaboration’ with the blessing of HMA that serves to further solidify the brand as a supporter of the thought leaders whose works are at the forefront of culture today”.

Red Bull Music Academy presents The RZA – Listen & Love

Wu Music Group, New York

As the creative force behind the Wu-Tang clan, RZA needs almost no introduction. But we’re going to attempt it anyway. Through his productions in the early nineties with Wu-Tang, RZA pioneered the east-coast underground hip-hop sound that went on to rule the scene for years. His rare musical combination of bleak, minimal, kung-fu-streaked soul was a breath of fresh air for those weary of the west-coast G-Funk sound prevalent in rap music at the time. After reaching remarkable chart success with Wu-Tang and solo Wu-members like Method Man, Ghostface Killah, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the RZA turned his attention to even wider musical horizons. In addition to releasing records as his hedonistic alter ego, Bobby Digital, he began a prolific soundtrack scoring career, racking up credits for Jim Jarmusch, Takashi Okazaki, and Quentin Tarantino. Here, he sits down for a Fireside Chat, and waxes poetic on his inspirations, successes, and past and present projects. Bring da ruckus!

NEW RELEASE: Goapele – Break of Dawn

Features the songs “Play”, “Tears On My Pillow”, and “Milk & Honey”

Singer-songwriter Goapele broke out of Bay Area at the beginning of the last decade determined to make a difference in the world of music. Seamlessly blending genres while refusing to be limited by the “neo-soul” tag, this eloquent musician completed her first release Closer in 2001 and never looked back. Embraced from the beginning by critics and fans alike, Goapele carved the perfect niche for herself as she created music that fused jazz, soul, and hip hop with her own beautiful poetry.

Not content to be merely another singer lost in the machine, Goapele’s follow-up recordings Even Closer (2002) and Change It All (2005) were released through major labels in conjunction with her own independent label Skyblaze.

“I like being more hands on when it comes to my music,” she says of the family-owned independent label. “Establishing Skyblaze allowed me to have a more direct connection with my business as well as the music.”

While Rolling Stone magazine once called Goapele the “spiritual love child of Sade and D’Angelo,” her searing voice can be both sensuous and serious, often on the same song. After taking off six years from recording, Goapele has returned to the forefront of the music scene with Break of Dawn (dropping in October of this year), a collection of sophisticated songs dealing with love, loss, and all the life in between.

“One of my goals for the newest project Break of Dawn was to be more uninhabited,” Goapele says. “I came into this business as a young woman who wanted to be taken seriously for my music, but, now I’m more willing to share my sexiness as well. I realize that it’s possible to be both complex and provocative.” The new disc is both of these things and more. Featuring a diverse array of tracks ranging from the sleek and sexy “Play” to the heartfelt “Hush,” the release is a stunning testament to an artist embarking on an exciting new chapter of her already storied career.

FINAL PUSH: Siji Presents “Elder’s Corner” & Official Kickstarter Campaign

Following my year long stint in Lagos back in 2009 with the help of a few guardian angels and a fist full of passion, I finally got to plant the seeds for what has now become my debut documentary feature, ‘Elder’s Corner‘.

Elder’s Corner is a musical journey through pivotal moments in the colorful and dynamic history of Nigeria as told through the lives, work and careers of the nations foremost music icons.

During the course of my visit to Nigeria, I was able to seek out and engage a number of the country’s foremost music legends, among them; Fatai Rolling Dollar, Emperor Dele Ojo, Jimi Solanke, Tony Benson and Elder Statesman, Chris Ajilo. They told me such incredible stories of triumph, success, tragedy, disappointment, as well as their continued love and passion for mistress music which has taken them to such dizzy heights as well as dark and pitiful lows. They also shared with me their hopes and dreams for the coming generation and their beloved country, Nigeria. I now wish to share all these incredible stories and so much more with you all, for in many ways, the collective journeys of these pioneering icons reflects that of the nation itself.

We have recently interviewed legendary Jazz Pianist Randy Weston, world renowned DJ/Producer and Yoruba Records founder, Osunlade, legendary Vibraphonist and soul funk maestro, Roy Ayers as well as Afrobeat DJ/Producer, Rich Medina and singer, songwriter, performer Wunmi for the project.

I have just launched this 40 day kickstarter fundraising campaign in a bid to help raise awareness for the project as well to help fund its crucial next phase which would involve our having to seek out and interview a few more key icons particularly those from both the eastern and northern parts of Nigeria, as well as key contributors including historians, ethnomusicologists and political figures. In addition, we need to stage a number of first time, intimate, live music performance sessions between the icons and musicians from the coming generation including myself, (Siji) and the likes of Keziah Jones, Ade Bantu, Nneka and others.

Your combined support to the project will go a long way towards helping to make this a possibility and indeed a dream come true. Kindly lend your support to this great and historical documentary by MAKING A PLEDGE and sharing it with all your friends and associates globally.
