Charity presents “Sounds Like Love”

Hello good people, we hope all is well in whichever part of the world you find yourself.  As you many of you know, we’ve promoted lots and lots of artists early in their careers such as Ledisi, Kem, Amp Fiddler, Raheem DeVaughn, Dwele, Eric Roberson, Anthony David, and many, many others.  The success of our events has led us to what we feel is the next big thing in the the world of music.

Charity is her name, and she is currently in the studio the studio working with Amp Fiddler (Lucy Pearl, George Clinton, Prince, Maxwell, Seal, Brand New Heavies), Mckinley (Marvin Gaye) Brandon Williams (Jay Electronica), and a bevy of other talented producers, in preparation of the release of her debut album, Sounds Like Love this July.

We are, now at the point where we need a little help from our friends to put the finishing touches on the project. Because this is an independently produced project, funded mostly by love and passion,  our funds have gotten somewhat tight as we near the end. We are therefore  asking you, our UO fam, to donate to the cause in support of this worthwhile effort. . As of today, we are 30 days out of achieving our goal of raising 5k, and are 51% of the way there.  With your help we can not only meet this goal, but exceed it. By donating, you get some great benefits.

EVENT REVIEW: “Art In The Streets” at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA [LA]

I was a bit skeptical at the idea of MOCA’s Street Art Exhibit at first.

words/photos: Ani Yapundzhyan

I wasn’t too comfortable with the idea of throwing all these amazing creations in a museum and having wealthy bourgeois snobs pass by calling it “art” when they would scoff at the same artwork if it was hit up on a wall in the street.

But what happened when I started walking through the endless hallways filled with decades worth of work representing our culture was the astounding sense of history that overcame me.

One by one, those artists are amazing. But put them all together-over 50 massive installations-and you realize the sheer enormity of the culture of street art.

The Graf artists are plentiful, spanning through decades – Futura, Haze, Swoon, Retna, Saber, Revok, and Cartoon to name a few.

Then there are the photographers and filmmakers who captured these moments in time- Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, Steve Grody, Estevan Oriol, Terry Richardson and Spike Jonz among many.

There is a special section dedicated to the “Fun Gallery” which connected New York graffiti artists with the downtown art community in the early 1980s. Included in this are works by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, who shaped the Fun Gallery’s history.

Shepard Fairey and Banksy have their signature work up.

Twist has put together one of my favorite installations, complete with three robotic graffiti artists up on each other’s shoulders, standing on a van, hitting up a wall.

This is the tip of the massive iceberg.

Rightfully preserved under glass as artifacts are dozens of graf books from different artists, showing their pieces from the early 80′s. Also under the same glass are hundreds of markers in different colors used by the artists.

Spray cans line the walls.

The entire women’s restroom is hit up. There is a huge pink piece going across all the doors to the stalls.

It is truly overwhelming. Something I have to come back and see again, just to capture each and every detail.

The history of street art is most definitely preserved on those walls.

I happened to go on one of the opening days, so to me, the best part of the entire exhibit was that most of those legendary artists were present, walking around, signing books and talking to the people.

It truly was historic. And unprecedented.

For many, it was an emotional experience.

It is the blood, sweat and tears of the street inside of a museum.

The exhibit runs through August 8th, and if you go on a Thursday, you can view the art the way you would on the streets that it came from: for free.

EVENT REVIEW: Rock The Bells 2011 Press Conference

words/photos: Ani Yapundzhyan

What I’ve always known about the Rock The Bells festival and what was confirmed for me at this year’s press conference is that it’s a family affair.

The mutual respect between the world-class artists and Guerilla Union CEO Chang Weisberg is a unique circumstance in artist-promoter relationships and it is one huge reason why this festival is so successful each and every year.

“We’ve been friends a long time and every festival that Guerilla Union puts on is a quality event,” says RTB all-star B-Real of Weisberg, “he makes sure that the artists get a great look, and he’s one of the few promoters who looks out for the artist.”

Rock The Bells press conference with some of this year's artists, from top to bottom: Souls of Mischief, Supernatural, Evidence, The RZA, Guerilla Union CEO Chang Weisberg and B-Real

Weisberg is a CEO, but he is also a true fan at core and its his love for the culture that allows him to choose, and in many cases re-unite the most respected and loved artists throughout the eras of hip hop.

This is why, sitting at the press conference table are the likes of RZA, Souls of Mischief, Havoc, and B-Real to name a few-all representing different styles of hip hop, yet all legends in their own right.

When asked who he is looking forward to seeing the most at this year’s show, RZA excitedly exclaims, “To see Souls of Mischief ’93 ‘Till Infinity’, that’s a classic thing happening for me. And for Lauryn to do ‘Mis-education’, that’s classic.”

Brotherly Love: Souls Of Mischief

Weisberg points out that Rock The Bells is also at the forefront of spotting artists just before they blow up.

“i think what separates Rock The Bells, just from the classic acts, are the acts that are gonna be the next classic acts. I mean whether its gonna be Curren$y, Childish Gambino

I mean guys, Wiz Khalifa was up on our stage last year and I had to explain to people who he was. I had to explain who B.O.B. was. Rock The Bells is here for those acts as well.

I’m hoping that at some point we fulfill everybody’s dream and we keep this goin’, and right now I have to pinch myself because I’m looking at this year’s line-up and it’s a piece of history one, that will never be re-created again. Two, it’s still in it’s infancy, things are gonna grow from the energy that we put out today.”

After the press conference, I found B-Real and asked him a very important question:

Fusic: You’ve hit the ten-foot bong on the Rock The Bells stage, you’ve passed around the world’s largest joint, what new smoking apparatus do you plan on unveiling this time around?

B-Real: That’s a good question. I’m going to have to get something prepared for that, because now that you’ve said that, I have to think about it. I have to see what we have to top those other ones.

Fusic: Because sometimes those joints are so huge that we’re like, “Nah, that can’t be real, and then we see you start to smoke it…”

B-Real: And then you smell it and you’re like, “Wow, that’s real!”

West Sidah Ridah: B-Real

Fusic: Cypress Hill has performed at every Rock The Bells since the inception. What is it about you guys that keeps the fans, for so many years in a row, down to see you guys’ show?

B-Real: We don’t oversaturate the market with performing all the time. We limit our performances in certain places so that there’s value in it, so people aren’t  “Oh yeah, we just saw them two weeks ago over here…” And we’re blessed, we love our fans and we appreciate the fact that they’ve been there from day one so every show, we try to give them the best possible show to entertain them.

Fusic: How often do you rehearse for a show like RTB?

B-Real: We do maybe two days of rehearsals, we don’t really try to overdo it because we know it, and we try to go off of our vibe and what we’re feelin’ and our adrenaline. And if its too contrived, people can see that.

While B-Real is a RTB veteran, this year will be Havoc and Prodigy‘s first time performing at the concert. I made sure to ask Havoc how he felt about this Mobb Deep reunion, and his answer was simple and to the point. With a huge smile on his face, he said, “It’s an honor and a little bit of vindication, all wrapped in one.”

Fusic: When Prodigy was in jail, what did you guys talk about during your visits?

Havoc: We always looked forward to workin’ on another album, because this is the longest we’ve ever been away from each other. So every time I would go see him in jail, that would be one of the things we would always talk about. And performin’. We’ve performed once since he’s been home, and now our next major even that we’re going to be doing is Rock The Bells.

Fusic: And it’s major, for real.

Havoc: Exactly. It’s not a little show, right? It’s not to be taken lightly.

Havoc of Mobb Deep

Soon after our interviews, the artists did 15 minute mini-sets on the House Of Blues stage.

The kids in the audience were riled up as B-Real and Sen Dogg performed “How I Could Just Kill A Man.”

Senn Dogg of Cypress Hill

Rakaa joined Evidence for “Worst Comes To Worst.”

I remember a random verse from Evidence that was hilarious to me, “I could smoke a whole eighth in a spliff/ some call it a problem, I call it a gift.”

Evidence of Dialated Peoples

Rakaa Iriscience of Dialated Peoples

The highlight of the evening came in the form of Souls Of Mischief. With everyone going crazy around me, I had to stand still as they performed “’93 ‘Till Infinity”, still finding it hard to believe that it’s been 18 years since the song was written.

And this is what makes Rock The Bells so special. The festival is an opportunity for all lovers of hip hop to re-live and cherish those moments from decades ago that defined the culture.

Year after year….

ROCK THE BELLS featured a number of headliners performing their most influential albums in their entirety for the first time in the history of hip-hop entertainment last summer. The tradition continues this year with Ms. Lauryn Hill performing her landmark, multi-platinum selling, multi-GRAMMY winning album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill and Nas performing his breakthrough debut album Illmatic with special guests AZ, Pete Rock and DJ Premier. Nas says about performing Illmatic this summer, “For years people have been asking me to do Illmatic in so many ways, from stage plays to movies to books, but the time wasn’t right. Where music is going now, the time is right. This will be my biggest production and it only makes sense to do it on the best rap tour which also happens to be a brand I’ve built and am a partner in. Can’t wait to kill it with my comrades AZ, Premo & Pete Rock!”

Full album sets can also be expected from: Cypress Hill performing their 1993 multi-platinum album Black Sunday, featuring modern rock radio mainstay “Insane In The Membrane”; Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star performing their 1998 self-titled debut album; Raekwon & Ghostface teaming up for critically acclaimed, platinum selling Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and more.

With ten of the biggest records in the history of the genre and the freshest new talent bubbling from the underground, this summer’s Rock The Bells is another dream come true.”

ROCK THE BELLS will feature three main stages this year. The two returning stages are the ROCK THE BELLS STAGE and the PAID DUES STAGE, which will feature independent hip-hop acts that performed at the Paid Dues Festival this past April in San Bernardino and new artists-on-the-rise. Paid Dues Festival creator Murs says, “I am excited that I once again have the privilege of hosting the Paid Dues Stage. We will have the honor of showcasing some of the best talent in independent hip hop as part of the worlds largest and longest running hip hop festival… the Paid Dues stage is gonna be the one to watch this year.”

The 36 CHAMBERS STAGE is a new addition to the festival and will primarily feature members of the Wu-Tang Clan as well as artists selected by stage curator and Wu-Tang Clan mainstay RZA. A fourth stage that will also be added to most markets is the GRINDTIME NOW STAGE, which will feature battle-style performances.

Guerilla Union, the live events company behind world-class platforms including Cypress Hill SmokeOut Festival and Paid Dues Independent Hip-Hop Festival, has teamed up with a new title sponsor Boost Mobile for the eighth annual installment of ROCK THE BELLS.

Unlike Any OtherJeremy “Ayro” Ellis is notorious for beat mechanic wizardry and he unleashes his talent here with a melange of hip-hop and jazz. An infectiously funky Fender Rhodes riff, glitchy beats, and buzzing synth lines meld to create a basement dwelling, head-bobbing vibe. Underground hip-hop veteran Phat Kat loans his quintessential Detroit swagger to the track and emcee Jah Connery delivers acerbic verbal artistry to create a superb blend of gritty elegance. Rounding out the release are three live Maschine edits, Double Homage Parts 1 & 2 and Revenge of the Baboon. Each showcases Jeremy’s funk-fueled fingertip dexterity with chopped drum breaks and frantic horn stabs that will turn heads of the most snobbish beat connoisseurs worldwide.

WOWZERS!!!! This man has to be seen to be believed.

Gotta love Ronnie Cash & Ayro.  Love when the beat changes up.
-DJ Graffiti

dope beats, as is to be expected from the longhaired red baron of the mpc. glad to see he hasn’t lost his detroit dirt. the question is, was he playing the pads with his fingers, his chin, or his ass!
-DJ Scribe

Superb music!

Have been a big fan of Jeremy’s work since his releases on Ubiquity and this new material is nothing short of stellar!! Will be supporting this on my daily drivetime show in Atlanta, The S.O.U.L. of Jazz on Jazz 91.9fm WCLK!!
-Jamal Ahmad

Feel the unsequenced liveness of the broken barriers of Jeremy Ellis’ Maschine manipulation in to unfettered but formed funk.  Add Detroit veteran emmcee Phat Kat and Jah Connery’s scientific stylings and this is a home run.
-Kevin Reynolds

C’mon son….its jeremy ellis….of course its quality!
-King Britt

-Phil Asher

All of the way!! Huge Fan!
-Roy Davis Jr.

Yes! Yes! Yes! So good to hear some new cuts from my boy Ayro! Jeremy Ellis does it like no other. Full support.
