Janet Jackson Up Close and Personal

By Dashaun Simmons

It’s been seven years since the Super Bowl, which altered the trajectory of Janet Jackson’s music career. She’s gone from performing in arenas in front of over 10,000 fans, to Radio City Music Hall. While the hall is a prestigious venue, it’s a far cry from the huge arenas she’s toured in the past. After an almost 20-year career in music and acting you have to wonder if this is just the normal progression of an artist of her caliber, or the repercussions of showing a little too much to the public?

Janet’s arrival onstage was met with both applause and screams as she stood before the audience towering in high heels and a one piece showing enough cleavage to make Jermaine Dupri cry (at least you had em JD). Even the women in attendance had to take a deep breath as they along with their dates looked in awe. There was also a collective sense of worry in the air, as the heels limited Janet’s ability to dance. Thankfully that didn’t last very long. After the first act, Janet through on her dancing shoes and got down and dirty, even making her back up dancers look weak. Although she’s a little older, Janet still brings the goods to her performances. She took us through a musical journey from her days of rocking skintight Guess jeans with songs like “When I Think of You” and “Control” all the way up to current hits like “Feedback”. Watching Janet perform the dance routine from Rhythm Nation at age 44 you’re reminded why she’s lasted this long. Janet is a true performer. She’s always entertained with a mix of excellent dancing combined with a gentle voice and sex appeal to tie it all together, and this night was no different. The band backing Janet nailed everyone of her classics. They seemed enthused to play for her as they rode every song to its final note.

Several times in between songs a large screen above the stage showed images reaching back as far as Janet playing little Penny on Good Times and the lovely more mature Charlene on Different Strokes. But it was images of a young Michael and Janet together that brought tears to the fans of both icons. Her performance of “Scream” with her brother’s large image looming above was the emotional zenith of the evening. As fans we may miss the King of Pop, but Janet misses her big brother. This intimate evening proved that when it comes to the stage even if slightly smaller, Janet is still number one.

DJ Vadim’s The Electric teams up with DC Shoes to launch ‘The Speed Of Life’

The Electric Bikes!

In a world where a thousand bands release a thousand albums each week, it takes a lot to get some attention, but The Electric have been getting just that.  On the weekend of the 12th of March, hundreds of electric blue wrapped bikes started appearing all over the place – outside the Tate Modern, Harrods, Leicester Square, Shoreditch and Covent Garden in London, Brighton Pier, Oxford, Berlin, Texas…  Perhaps now millions of people have walked passed one of the bikes and wondered ‘what’s that?’

Life is moving increasingly faster, through societal and technological changes the pressure is perpetual and it’s seemingly all about progress. The Electric, DJ Vadim’s new super group, have teamed up with DC Shoes to launch ‘The Speed Of Life’ -  a mission to re-connect you with the world around you, to bring people together in celebrating creativity and shared experience, to slow life down a notch so you can participate in the launch of The Electric’s debut album Life is Moving and win yourself a DC PK Ripper Bike, snowboards, clothes, performances in your own homes and albums from the band everyone’s talking about.

The Electric supported the massive Fat Freddy’s Drop on their 2010 European Tour.  They launched their album, Life is Moving to a sold out Koko in London on March 12th before flying off to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas where they were named as one of the top 5 performances by the influential US magazine  Playing at some of the biggest international festivals this coming summer, including Glastonbury, their mix of hip hop with soul, bass culture and dub-step is exciting crowds wherever they go.

The Electric’s producer, DJ Vadim is “a veteran presence in the DJ community as well as one of the foremost producers in too many communities to count, Vadim is never running out of ideas,”  URB Magazine. He has been described as “one of the few artists creating genuinely new work in the Hip Hop field,” an artist who “cannot be ignored” who “makes the beats grow on trees” Fader

Life is Moving is a social and artistic experiment that gleams the streets of our cities as a stage and celebrates the diversity of humanity through individual expression. Finders of these bikes will need to snap the best pictures and take the best video next to these rare duel wheeled monsters, there are NO limits to the brief so feel free to go crazy, get naked, dress up, sing, dance, pose (maybe all at the same time) and upload the result to…

So far there has been a man get naked on Tottenham Court Road, a skateboarding baby, free-runners and fire-jugglers doing their special thing…

Do you deserve that DC PK Ripper bike or a snowboard more than them?

The Electric will be using footage submitted to create a series of videos, including the video to the Zeds Dead remix of Toot Toot.

Move Forward Music x Fusicology SXSW Showcase Recap | Videos

The Move Forward Music x Fusicology SXSW Showcase went off last Friday night at Suite 101 in Austin with the crowd packed in, shoulder to shoulder, from about an hour after doors opened until the club us down at 2am. It would be hard to say who put on the best show of the night, because everybody who rocked went all the way in and had the crowd going wild.

With showstopping sets by J*DaVeY, YC the Cynic, Homeboy Sandman, Black Milk, Pac Div and Stalley, it seemed as if each artist that took the stage was trying to top the performance that preceded them. The evening moved along rather quickly and the club stayed packed for the whole night, with the audience growing more and more excited and intense (and intoxicated) with each act. Special thanks to Lyrics to Go Ent., Shameless Management, Just Be Cool and the staff at Suite 101.

3/21 Release: Pharoahe Monch W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)

Pharoahe Monch W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)
In Stores March 22nd on W.A.R. Media/Duck Down Music

July 27th 2023:

Lieutenant Gaviston speaks of a recon mission in Kabul, Afghanistan where he discovers classified information that changes EVERYTHING that he believes about this W.A.R. This information is uploaded & transmitted through time. If you eventually hear this; you have been ordained or genetically pre-exposed to have received this information. What you will eventually hear is a WARNING.

These words are powerfully delivered by Idris Elba to set a tone for Pharoahe Monch‘s new album W.A.R. (We Are Renegades). The material presented is a consistent message from start to finish with new epiphanies exposed after various sets of songs. The order of music helps the listener see the vivid stories that Pharoahe is painting through the use of his lyrics.

The production compliments Monch’s delivery & takes on a genuine art form that could easily stand on its own. Live instruments resonate at the start & end of certain tracks, such as his title song W.A.R. featuring Immortal Technique & Vernon Reid. Producers Exile, Marco Polo, M-Phazes, Fatin, Diamond D, Mike Loe, Samiyam, Adam Deitch, Eric Krasno & Pharoahe Monch himself help shape the album into what will be Monch’s greatest work to date.

Pharoahe Monch’s vision for the album is supported with guest features that provide an eclectic mix of sounds. Fans can look forward to material with Jill Scott, Styles P, Citizen Cope, Jean Grae, Royce Da 5′ 9,” Immortal Technique, Vernon Reid, Phonte, Mr. Porter, Mela Machinko, Showtyme & DJ Boogie Blind.
