NEW KINGSTON TO HEADLINE BOB MARLEY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT GRAMERCY THEATER FEBRUARY 5TH
Modern reggae’s elite quartet, New Kingston, continues its 2015 hot streak, releasing the euphoric video for its single “Honorable” from its Billboard chart-topping album,Kingston City (Easy Star Records). The video, taken from the group’s highly acclaimed third full-length release, is set to premiere on Wednesday, December 9, onYahoo Music. New Kingston is also set for a 22-date national tour with roots reggae powerhouse Rebelution to begin on January 7th.
“‘Honorable’ is a statement, a righteous refusal of stereotypes. The feel of the video is a mission—an enlightening mission, focusing on the lyrics and the unity displayed in the video,” explains New Kingston drummer/vocalist Courtney Panton Jr.
It’s been said the New York-based band embodies the perfect balance of traditional and contemporary reggae sensibilities. On “Honorable,” the group has reached a creative milestone.
Rootfire enthuses: “New Kingston’s fresh new single turns everything you know about the band upside down. That’s what New Kingston’s song ‘Honorable’ does for progressive reggae in the U.S. We’ve got this amazing moment happening and we need a new voice asking a new kind of question. With ‘Honorable,’ three Jamaican-American brothers from Brooklyn, schooled from a young age by their father, deliver a patient and poignant song for the struggle. The question they’re asking is, ‘Where’s the future of black reggae in the U.S.?’ And the answer is right here.”
The video was shot while the group was on tour in Eugene, Oregon, by video director Ife Adeniji (known previously for his work Nappy Roots for the track “Hazy”) for his production company An Artistic Outlet Production. “We knew we wanted to make a simple and militant video that focused on the music and messaging more than fancy visuals,” reveals Courtney Panton Jr. “Ife’s work was exactly what we were looking for. We met him at sound check the day before we shot the video, and shot the video early the next morning just before heading to Portland, Oregon, for our next show.”
New Kingston’s Kingston City debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae chart. Kingston City (released January 27, 2015,) is the band’s third studio album and their first release to claim the #1 spot on the Billboard Reggae chart. The album is also their first release on the leading US reggae label Easy Star Records. The family group, which features three brothers (Stephen, Courtney Jr., and Tahir) and their father, create what Top Shelf Reggae calls, “…a genuine body of work that displays an incredible vocal range, candid lyrics and impressive instrumentals. It gives the listener the sort of meaningful connection and escape that every piece of music should provide.” The new record includes 12 songs and guest appearances by members of Tribal Seeds, Hawaiian singer-songwriter Kimie Miner, Sister Carol, The Wailing Souls, and the late, great reggae legend Sugar Minott.
Up next, New Kingston will be supporting Rebelution on its “Winter Greens Tour” from January 7th thru January 30th. On April 9th, New Kingston will join the progressive reggae community when they perform at the esteemed California Roots Carolina Sessions in Myrtle Beach, SC.
