Martin Luther McCoy was born in San Francisco, California. A summer child who bathed in the sweet soul music of the seventies and found himself a Bill Withers and Sam Cooke fan before being properly introduced to the electrifying perennial funk mob, Parliament Funkadelic. A life long student of music, Martin began writing songs as early as age 6 and would rearrange the gospel songs he learned in church. The influence of San Francisco’s cultural melting pot allowed him to gain a great appreciation for rock and roll. His voice is anointed with the ethers of the gospel church but his pen speaks to sinners and saints alike.
A graduate of Morehouse College, Luther started his own label Rebel Soul Records and has continued to defy the laws of traditional RnB /Neo Soul artists by melding indie soul and indie rock into a genre he aptly calls Rebel Soul. “What is more important, making history or making excuses?” is written on the ceiling right above the studio console where Martin puts finishing touches on his fourth studio release, American Gold (Spring 2012) that he calls “ mine music… music for the times. There’s gold in the hills of our mind, we just have to mine it. Open up our thoughts and grow. It’s all about expansion.”
Martin started releasing his own music with his debut ‘’The Calling’’ in 1999 to critical acclaim. His sophomore release, ‘’Rebel Soul Music’’ produced the hit “Daily Bread’’ and a video that made VH1’s top ten in 2005. For years he toured with the Roots and has made cameos in various films and TV shows. In 2007 he made his cinematic debut in a starring role in the Academy Award nominated film Across The Universe where he performed the new definitive version of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
Joi Gilliam hails from the ubiquitous musical mecca of Atlanta. A gifted singer with a funky style and brash delivery all her own, this dirty debutant is Dungeon Family (OutKast, Goodie Mob) official and has links to the bay area via Rafael Saadiq as a member of his neo soul outfit Lucy Pearl. After touring with Parliament Funkadelic as a member of Children of Production, Joi has moved to the west coast and will be making her Yoshis debut with Martin Luther and Siddhartha.
In November 2009, singer/songwriter Marlon Hauser met his fellow bandmates while wandering the streets of San Francisco, in the middle of a permanent existential crisis. Upon that moment, their writing process began and has bewitchingly metamorphosized into an all-encompassing live musical transformative experience. While carving out an idiosyncratic niche for freak followers, Siddhartha’s music is becoming widely known as Dashiki Shoegaze – a genre all unto itself.
