BIO
Few singers from the nascent "new school" of conscious soul possess the grace, strength and determination of Amel Larrieux, whose epic solo debut Infinite Possibilities (2000) placed her right away in a musical niche all her own. On that disc and her other albums Groove Theory (1995, recorded in a duo of the same name with Bryce Wilson), Bravebird (2004), Morning (2006), and Lovely Standards (2007), Larrieux pulls from a wealth of influences to create her distinctive sound, including jazz, hip-hop, rock, gospel, funk, and R&B, with flashes of Middle Eastern, West Africa, and Indian ethnic styles.
Larrieux has contributed to film soundtracks, collaborated with hip-hop supergroup The Roots on several tracks and tours, and was recognized with a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Where is the Love" by Stanley Clarke. She has also been spotlighted as a style maven by Essence, Honey, Harper's Bazaar, Trace, The Fader, and other magazines. In addition, she is at work on the next Groove Theory album with Wilson and is on the verge of releasing her next solo album, Ice Cream Every Day, having released the tracks "Orange Glow" and "Don't Let Me Down" over two years ago.
Over the course of her storied career, Larrieux has created a body of work that experiments with the endless range of creativity and exploration - lyrically, musically, and personally. She continues to trumpet the challenge, not only to herself, but to the self-limiting and thus incomplete definition, of what is commercially identified as black music and art today.
