About B.J. The Chicago Kid
Born, raised and nurtured on the south side of Chicago in the early 80’s, B.J. was exposed to the life of the streets and the church at the same time. With both His Mom and Dad serving as choir directors, he had no choice but to fall head over hills for music and fine arts. B.J. began singing at the age of 6, but the drums were his first love.
All through elementary school B.J. was too shy and fearful of judgment from his peers to sing. At the age of 19 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue music full-time. His first gig as a background singer was with the Grammy Award winning group Mary Mary. B .J. has certainly overcome his shyness working live on stage with Nelly, Lalah Hathaway, Kanye West, Pharrell, Common, 50 Cent, Omarion, Jamie Foxx, Avant, Salt N Pepa, Mario, Stevie Wonder, Bebe Winans, Bow Wow, T-Pain, The Killers and Usher.
About 1-O.A.K.
Known by many for his collaborations with Teedra Moses and fellow HNRL member Trackademicks, to his remixes of Little Dragon and Penguin Prison, 1-O.A.K. finally presents his debut offering. Thirteen songs, entirely self-produced, Special Request couples 1-O.A.K.’s years of extensive vocal experience with personal musical ambition. Rooted in Oakland Soul and Funk, 1-O.A.K. manages to present a project that represents civic pride as well as his ability to transcend those roots, fusing everything from Hip-Hop, Samba to UK Funky. As R&B and Soul music are increasingly influenced by other genre’s sensibilities, 1-O.A.K.'s sound will continue to nourish those with broad musical appetites.
