Charles Bradley Announces Festival Shows, Thanks Fans For Support During Cancer Treatment & Recovery

Soul Great Charles Bradley Returns to the Road with Festival Appearances Across The Globe

Thanks Fans for Support During Cancer Treatment & Recovery

Photo by Austin Nelson (@theaustinnelson), taken at High Water Festival

Charles Bradley will return to the road with His Extraordinaires for festival appearances this summer and fall including Sasquatch and Bottle Rock Festivals this weekend. The soul great is also set for NYC-area performances at Governors Ball and Governors Ball pre-party at Brooklyn Bowl, the inaugural Arroyo Seco Festival in Southern California, and more. See full tour routing below.

The dynamic live performer has successfully completed treatment and has been given the go-ahead by his doctors to return do the stage following a stomach cancer diagnosis last fall. The 68-year old singer made his first live appearance post-treatment last month at the High Water Festival in Charleston, SC and is excited to be back. He is grateful to his doctors for the excellent care he received and to his family, friends and fans for rallying around him. Bradley notes:

“I am so grateful to my beautiful fans and touched by all the love and support they showed me through my crisis and time of sickness. They truly lifted me up and kept me going. I am honored and glad to be back and am going to give you all of my love.”

While “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” took time off from the road over the last few months, he was still very much present in pop culture. Three of his songs were used in the HBO hit series Big Little Lies with additional high profile placements coming soon. He also appeared in last year’s Netflix series Luke Cage and in a spot during CBS Sports’ March Madness coverage. Bradley’s 2016 appearance on CBS This Morning: Saturday (interview, “Changes” // “Ain’t It A Sin“) was nominated for a 2017 Daytime Emmy award for “Outstanding On-Camera Musical Performance in a Daytime Program” earlier this year, and he has been nominated for several A2IM Awards including Best Live Act and Best Blues/Jazz/R&B Album (Changes).

Charles Bradley released his critically lauded third album Changes on Daptone Records in April 2016. He performed shows across the globe and made a number of national television appearances including Conan andThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He also returned to Austin, TX for SXSW where he delivered a show stopping set for NPR Music; had a touching conversation with NPR Morning Edition’s David Greene; and Pitchfork ran a politically-charged feature on the singer, and named his cover of Black Sabbath’s “Changes” “Best New Track, to name just a few things.

Downbeat article 4 1/2 Stars – DownBeat

“Cameron Graves is a musical genius. He has an innovative approach to the piano that is completely unique. Cameron’s new album ‘Planetary Prince’ is an amazing and almost unbelievable combination of modal jazz, romantic era European classical music, and mathematical death metal. A style so cool that it deserves its own genre…” - Kamasi Washington

“Cameron is not only a wonderful musician but also an innovative composer, bringing elements of classical music, prog rock and the aesthetics and phrasing of hip-hop and L.A. beat music into his own jazz compositions. All of this can be heard on his excellent new album, Planetary Prince, which sounds like the best elements of Weather Report, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Austin Peralta and Flying Lotus.” - LA Weekly

Cameron Graves, visionary pianist, composer and founding member of the Los Angeles West Coast Get Down collective, ushers in a seismic shift of the jazz landscape with his genre-blurring debut album Planetary Prince.
Upon signing with Mack Avenue Records, Graves’ nearly released four song EP of the same name was expanded to an eight track full length album, all packed with the same mind-expanding invention that marked all of the work previously generated by the WCGD – including Kamasi Washington’s universally acclaimed debut The Epic (which prominently featured Graves throughout its three discs).

The core of the players on Planetrary Prince are made up of fellow West Coast Get Down members, whose musical and personal relationships with Graves stretch back to their high school days: tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington, trombonist Ryan Porter, bassist Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, and drummer Ronald Bruner Jr. To their ranks are added trumpeter Philip Dizack and bassist Hadrien Feraud, both key members of the groundbreaking modern L.A. jazz scene.

Graves has also carved out a notable career apart from the WCGD. With his brother Taylor he formed the R&B/fusion duo The Graves Brothers, releasing their debut, Look to the Stars, in 2013. That project grew out of a British/American pop group called The Score with which the brothers found enormous success in England.
Graves was also a key member of actress/musician Jada Pinkett Smith’s nu-metal band Wicked Wisdom, providing entrée into the world of film and television scoring through the Pinkett Smith-directed film The Human Contract and TV series Hawthorne. Through his soundtrack work Graves connected with legendary bassist and fellow Mack Avenue Records recording artist Stanley Clarke, and is now a member of his latest band, touring internationally.

Sean Jones ‘Live From Jazz at the Bistro’ on Mack Avenue Records

unnamed-2

Available May 26th on Mack Avenue Records via Amazon: The young jazz veteran trumpeter Sean Jones believes passionately in championing the creative arc of artists who are committed to their life journey. “I think the progression of the art form [jazz] comes with people being allowed to be themselves in their rawest form with no compromise,” he has noted and added, “My body of work is going to show a progression of who Sean Jones is in the most honest form.”

While he spoke these words a few years ago, they serve as a vivid manifesto for his new Mack Avenue Records album, Live from Jazz at the Bistro, his eighth for the label and arguably the most dynamic, playful and loose-limbed excursion of his career. Indeed, the 38-year-old Jones brings to the sessions a stalwart poise, the fire of ecstasy and a whimsy in motion. “In a nutshell, I’ve been wanting to do a live album for a while,” he says. “I wanted to capture the band’s energy live and record what it’s like to go to one of my gigs. Granted, recording in a studio creates a polished sound where the music is all tied up. But this album, it’s real raw.”

Recorded at the St. Louis club Jazz at the Bistro, the seven-song album, produced by Al Pryor, features Jones presenting two versions of his band, as quartet and quintet, as they “hover on the bandstand between sobriety and intoxication,” he says. The longstanding quartet, comprising pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire has been together for eleven years.

“Having a band this long is really rare in jazz these days,” Jones says. “It’s really hard to do, but we have managed to keep playing together. When we play, it’s become like a conversation, like second nature.” The exception here is bringing in drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. on four tunes as a replacement for Calvaire, due to a scheduling conflict. On the four quintet tracks, Jones showcases another old friend and collaborator, alto and soprano saxophonist Brian Hogans.

unnamed-3

Live from Jazz at the Bistro opens with combustion on “Art’s Variable,” a Jones composition that begins with his playful trumpet line and the telegraphic rhythm team fire, with Evans imaginatively rushing on the keys. “I wrote this tune to imagine what it would have sounded like at a gig that Art Blakey might have done with John Coltrane,” Jones says.

The lyrical “Lost, Then Found” is highlighted by Jones and Hogans playing unison soprano sax-trumpet lines that develop into an echo of what each is playing. “We’ve been playing together for so long that we know where to go,” he says. “And I wanted to start the piece with Luques where he swings but also puts the Latin element into the heart of his playing.” The humorous backstory of the Jones composition is that he was walking around his house humming a bass line that then developed into a melody. But right before he started writing the tune out, he sifted through his stash of compositions and found the piece that he had written six years before but forgotten. Hence, the title.

The exhilarating “Piscean Dichotomy” was composed by Hogans. It starts with intensity but then, in the middle, gets spacey and dreamy and features Jones and the alto again playing killer harmony lines. The swinging-with-brio “Doc’s Holiday” is a rhythmically boozy tune written by Evans for a friend who was fond of “lapping up the juice,” Jones says. It features local color supplied by Jones and Hogans and a tasty solo by the composer. In the song there are hip rhythmic hits throughout that represent Doc’s attempts at sobriety.

The blazing-to-soothing “The Ungentrified Blues” features Jones delivering a variety of trumpeting voicings from screaming solos to staccato lines to a one-note hold that gets a rise from the crowd. It’s a tune Jones wrote when he was in St. Louis at a friend’s house right on the border of a gentrification housing project. “I wrote this as an 8-bar blues to get that raw blues form,” he says. “Sometimes we can play so fancy that we lose our grit. This is my way of not letting that happen.”

The uptempo “Prof” with raucous verve from both Hogans and Jones and scalding drums by Calvaire is a tribute to one of his college teachers, the late William Fielder, who also taught such future trumpet stars as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Terell Stafford, among many others. Nicknamed “Prof,” he was highly influential as a teacher, but he wasn’t a pushover. “Prof would mess with us,” says Jones. “He’d keep telling us, you’re not hip enough, your lives are boring. So this is my response: another blues with 15 bars and a wacky melody with fourths. He loved fourths.”

The final piece on the recording, “BJ’s Tune,” opens as a lyrical beauty with Jones’ slow and alluring trumpet line, then builds about halfway through with rhythmic dynamics that ignite the piece into an R&B spirit. Jones soars with high-range solos before bringing the epic journey to an end with a sublime take on “Amazing Grace.” Jones wrote the piece in New Orleans in 2004 at the city’s festival, pre-Katrina. “It’s a tribute to my nephew BJ, who is the son of my wild child brother who became a minister,” Jones says. “He sent me a picture of BJ and I got emotional thinking of the services that my brother and I attended growing up. It was a coming together in a spiritual community. The piece starts soft ands then builds to a whole room of people crying out. I wrote the tune to fuse jazz and gospel.”

About Sean Jones:

Live from Jazz at the Bistro represents one more triumph in a career that has been impressive in its expanse of accomplishments. A gospel-bred drummer who switched to trumpet when he was ten after hearing Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and Amandla, Jones found his jazz epiphany basking in John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, which summed up the youngster’s desire to explore the spirituality of the music. He received his master’s at Rutgers University, and then quickly began his ascent into the upper echelons of the jazz world.

He served for six years as the first-chair trumpeter for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, toured Europe with Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and Wayne Shorter with a Miles Davis project, and is now in his fifth year as a member of the SFJAZZ Collective. Heavily involved in education, Jones has taught at Duquesne University, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and is now chair of the brass department at Berklee College of Music.

NEW RELEASE: Niva the Soul Diva’s ‘Life, Love & Music’

artworks-000220361258-1mbxbe-t500x500-1
Fans of Authentic R&B Soul Music must check out Niva the Soul Diva’s ‘Life, Love & Music’

New York-based Niva the Soul Diva is a singer, songwriter and performer known for her crowd-pleasing, unique, blend of R&B, rock, hip-hop, dance and soul. A Houston, TX native, Niva grew up in the rough part of Houston – The Third Ward.

At an early age, she went on to leave her humble beginnings and follow the quintessential American Dream of moving to New York to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Growing up poor and lonely Niva withdrew into her own private world and found an escape and self-expression though writing and singing music. She discovered new friends through her music and, for a short time, was part of a local female R&B singing group.

At the same time, Niva realized Houston was a city more focused on rap music and – as an R&B singer – she needed to head to The Big Apple. So, in 2008 she took the fabled greyhound bus journey.  With no friends, no place to stay and very little money, what she did have was her talent and determination to make it. In early 2008, Niva responded to an ad for a singer from a production company called New Black Music.

After a successful audition, she began working with the production team on new material that had an old-school soul flavor. Niva immediately fell further in love with soul music as well as classic rock songs.  Niva studied artists such as Tina Turner and Bettye Wright and modeled her new style on their impressive skills and presence. She also found a new love of good ole rock n’ roll and became a big fan of Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. With this new musical direction fully in swing, Niva took on the stage name of ‘Niva the Soul Diva’

In 2010, Niva debuted her single ‘I Will Make It’. Around the same time, she teamed up with Spoken Word artist Kamal Supreme, and began channeling some of the pain and suffering she experienced growing up in Houston and poured it into the project.  Niva has since gone on to mentor with various established professional musicians and blossomed as an entertainer and singer, perfecting her skills and receiving industry acclaim from colleagues and professional critics, alike.

She has been invited to perform in several well-known venues and on New York morning television programs. She has had been the focus of various print articles in prestigious music and fashion magazines.  Check out her latest release “Niva the Soul Diva’s ‘Life, Love & Music”
