DETROIT, December 11, 2013—The 2014 Movement Electronic Music Festival makes its way back to Detroit’s Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26 for a three-day celebration of dance music and the people that make it great. 2014 marks the festival’s ninth year and promises to be the best one yet with a staggering assortment of rising talents, local heavyweights and pioneering legends.

Paxahau, producers of the annual dance event, are pleased to announce the phase one lineup featuring Detroit techno pioneer, Richie Hawtin; legendary dance music icon and Intec label boss, Carl Cox; and the highly versatile electronic music DJ/producer, Loco Dice.

Famed Radio One broadcaster, DJ and current Evolution Radio host, Pete Tong, whose name has been ubiquitous with dance music for decades, will make his Movement debut in 2014 as will rising hip-hop star, Action Bronson. The Queens-based MC (and notable culinary expert) recently released Blue Chips 2 with production duo, Party Supplies – a follow up to 2012’s critically acclaimed Blue Chipsalbum. Techno titans Speedy J and Lucy will perform as the collaborative duo Zeitgeber for the first time in the U.S. The duo released their self-titled album this past summer through Berlin-based Stroboscopic Artefacts. This is also Speedy J’s first album collaboration since 2005’s LP Collabs 3000 : Metalism.

A large number of local artists are included in the announcement today, fortifying the festival’s unwavering support of Detroit and the artists within. This includes one of Detroit’s favorite sons, Grammy-nominated DJ/producer and Planet E chief, Carl Craig; the legendary Jeff Mills; and Techno-soul pioneer, Eddie “Flashin” Fowlkes, just to name a few.

“We really wanted to have some fun with the lineup this year and showcase artists that continue to reinvent the wheel of electronic music as well as a slew of hometown favorites who are legends in their own right,” said Chuck Flask, artist coordinator for Movement Electronic Music Festival.

Tickets for Movement are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting www.Movement.us. The cost for a three-day weekend pass is just $110 and grants fans general admission access to the festival grounds with in-and-out privileges. Afro Funké says “Goodbye” after 10 Years at Zanzibar, Santa Monica

unnamed (1)

It is with a mix of satisfaction, bittersweet nostalgia, joy and excitement that we are announcing the end of Afro Funké’s current incarnation as a weekly event at Zanzibar in Santa Monica.  It has been an incredible and amazing 10 + year run for a weekly Thursday evening dance event whose focus has been to share non-mainstream, non-commercial music from far outside our own borders.

The weekly club, Afro Funke’, which celebrated its 10th Anniversary in June 2013, was the brainchild of Afro Roots star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA’s need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it’s far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who’s based in LA and his native Ghana, together with talent booker and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funke’, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy SoleSole spins his unique “Musaics,” or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation. Afro Funke’s profile has been greatly enhanced by its unique photo based flyers which feature Cary Sullivan’s cutting edge photographs of West African life as well as images from the club itself. DJ Glenn Red came on board a few years in to become and an integral and endearing part of the AF Family and serves as a resident DJ, musical mastermind and all around smooth operator.

Each week Afro Funke’ has presented international guest DJs, live band performances, guest musicians, dancers, cutting edge films, record release parties, fundraisers, fashion shows, art installations, crafts and more.

From Stevie Wonder jumping up with Rocky Dawuni live to an impromptu show by Zap Mama at their listening party to Yeni Kuti (daughter of the legendary Fela Kuti) tearing it up on the dance floor – one just never knew what to expect and that was always part of the magic of Afro Funke’.

While we will certainly miss serving our wonderful community of music lovers each & every week on the Westside and are grateful to Zanzibar for our wonderful home for the last decade, our decision is based on our plans to expand our mission beyond our great city of Los Angeles and across the globe.  We are looking forward to reaching new audiences, hosting larger events and continuing the journey.

The Grandfather of Rap Returns: Hustlers Convention | New feature documentary, is set to reveal the forgotten roots of rap

HCRGB300rTrimmed

The Grandfather of Rap Returns

Hustlers Convention, a new feature documentary, is set to reveal the forgotten roots of rap.

In 1973, a fast-talking hustler by the name of Sport played a huge part in the birth of Hip Hop. Brought to life by Lightnin’ Rod aka Jalal Nuriddin of The Last Poets, and backed by music from Kool & The Gang and many others, this street tale of card sharks, gamblers, dope peddlars and thieves, changed the face of music.

Melle Mel, Fab 5 Freddie and many others can still recite it word for word. Chuck D has described it as a ‘verbal bible to understand the streets’. Wu Tang, the Beastie Boys and Jungle Brothers have all paid homage to it.

Yet still, despite this recognition, the album is largely missing from its rightful place in history. The film makers behind the new film have just launched a crowd funding campaign to help change that.

For the last two years a documentary team has been following Jalal’s story, piecing together this cultural missing link. When Jalal’s street rhyming style, based on the African American jail toast tradition, met the Black Power politics of the post-Malcolm X era, the art of rap as we know it today, was born.

Fusicology_HC_Jalal

As a key member of New York’s The Last Poets, Jalal and his fellow members became the voice of a generation. They provided an expression of the anger of the streets like had never been heard before.

However, it was Jalal’s solo album, Hustlers Convention, which painted a colorful world of larger than life characters, doing what they needed to do to survive, that really set the bar for what rap as an art form could become.

Hip Hop may have changed over the years. But its origins haven’t. The film makers behind the project have just launched a crowd funding campaign to ensure that this crucial piece of cultural history is captured and preserved.

YouTube Preview Image

Film maker Mike Todd, whose last feature doc was the critically acclaimed Joe Frazier: When the Smoke Clears, explained: “This is a truly global story. Rap, as a key part of Hip Hop, has changed the world. It has given a voice to people across the globe. And yet, this crucial aspect of the art’s origins is missing from history. We want to change that.”

“Like many people, I grew up with this music. It provided an insight and an awareness about the world we lived in, a different perspective, which simply wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Everywhere where you find people searching to tell their own stories, with their own voice – you will find rap and Hip Hop. But despite the massive influence rap has had on global culture, so little is known about where it really comes from. For the first time, we are putting together a missing piece of history that will let people really understand the historical context of how and why this art form developed.”

The campaign to support the film can be found at www.hustlersconventionfilm.com. Perks include a unique limited edition vinyl of the legendary album, signed by its creator.

The documentary comes at a time when, for the first time in forty years, Jalal Mansur Nuriddin will be taking to the stage to perform Hustlers Convention live. It will take place at London’s iconic Jazz Café on February 10th 2014. It will be the first time the album has been performed in its entirety since its release.

Producer Lathan Hodge, who has been involved with Hip Hop for many years as a close collaborator with Public Enemy explains:

“Filming the gig in London will be the culmination of our journey with Jalal. We’re just reaching out now to people for who this history matters, to help us preserve it.”

Hustlers Convention the film is set for release in Summer 2014.
