EVENT REVIEW: Kendrick Lamar @ Roseland NYC

on March 6, 2013with 0 comments

First off it has to be known that NY loves Compton’s golden boy Kendrick Lamar. After having a great year in 2012 with the release of his major label debut good Kid, m.A.A.d city Kendrick returned to the five boroughs like nothing changed (except his ticket price). He went through the records that helped him earn his following like ADHD and P&P with ease. Hardcore fans were treated to songs that didn’t make his album but made it to their playlists like Westside, Right On Time.

While Kendrick may be the break out star of the TDE camp, he shares his shine with the rest of his Black Hippy crew. Ab-Soul performed Terrorist Threats and Schoolboy Q does his hit Hands On The Wheel. Q jokes that Kendrick’s new found success keeps them from hanging out and even offers to pay for a meet and greet.

The crowd enjoys the moment of crew love but it’s when Kendrick does material from his new album that the place really goes crazy. Tracks like Poetic Justice and Money Trees with Jay Rock stand out just as much on stage as they do on the album…in a good way. In between songs Kendrick still takes time to connect with his fans much like he did before the major deal.

He talks about still having to adjust to the new found fame. It seems he’s still viewing the world through the windshield of his momma’s caravan. In short not much has changed other than a larger audience and a bigger pool of songs to pick from. So if you are a fan of Kendrick see him when he hits your town and stick around after the last song. If you’re lucky you just might get treated to some cartoons and cereal on Kendrick.
