Jamaica Celebrates Its Legendary Music During The Island’s 50th Anniversary Of Independence

Fifty years of Jamaica’s independence also marks over 50 years of legendary Jamaican music. To commemorate the famous artists and genres that hail from the island, there are a number of heart-thumping music events and festivals this year. Throughout 2012, visitors will have an opportunity to experience the music of Jamaica during a series of island-wide concerts for a taste of Jamaica’s past and present.

The evolution of Jamaican music over the last 50 years has seen the rise of reggae with legends such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and Burning Spear, the introduction of ska including the sounds of the Skatalites and Derrick Morgan, the emergence of Rock Steady, and now the pulsating beats from today’s Dance Hall through award-winning artists such as Shaggy and Sean Paul. The island’s music is currently heard and emulated around the world. For instance the ska beat is included in songs by musicians like Gwen Stefani or the late Amy Winehouse.

“As we celebrate 50 years of Jamaica’s independence, we also honor aspects of our distinct culture such as our music,” said Jamaica’s Director of Tourism John Lynch. “Our music has transformed communities here in Jamaica and overseas with harmony driven songs from a variety of musicians past and present. Visitors to the country shouldn’t depart without taking in the sounds and rhythms of Jamaican music. It’s played around the world, but there’s nothing like hearing it here in Jamaica.”

The following is a list of 2012 events highlighting Jamaica’s music offerings:

Sonar Barcelona 2012 Announces New Additions

Flying Lotus (with 2 shows), Simian Mobile Disco, Mostly Robot, Trust and Nina Kraviz, among over 30 new artists added to Sonar 2012

Sónar 2012 adds today more than 30 new artists to its line-up, including USA’s Flying Lotus (who will be giving us 2 shows), Britain’s Simian Mobile Disco (presenting a new album), the dark synthpop duo from Canada Trust, and the Russian techno dj and producer Nina Kraviz.

Among the new additions are the world premiere of Mostly Robot at Sónar by Day, conceived by Native Instruments. Mostly Robot is a band featuring Jamie Lidell, Tim Exile, Jeremy Ellis, DJ Shiftee and Mister Jimmy all playing a live “technological jam” together with audio visual collective Pfadfinderei.

The festival presents the complete schedule for the SonarDôme stage, curated by Red Bull Music Academy; the BBC Radio 1 showcase, headed by Annie Mac and Simian Mobile Disco; and adds up to 17 new names to the long list of Spanish artists featured at this year’s event.

Check the Sónar 2012 line-up as it stands today click here

New Order, one of the most influential British bands in the history of music, will be headlining Sónar by Night on Saturday 16 June.  New Order is undoubtedly one of the key names in the history of music and one of the most influential bands of recent decades. The Manchester outfit pioneered the use and assimilation of the language of electronic dance music in a pop context after the end of Joy Division, and succeeded in creating a style all their own. Innovative and highly respected by the critics, as well as being massively successful, New Order have been responsible for an extensive catalogue of hits as timeless as “Blue Monday”, “Bizarre Love Triangle”, “True Faith”, “The Perfect Kiss,” “Regret” and “Fine Time,” among many others.

South Africa’s Die Antwoord has been also added to Sonar 2012, returning to the festival after their triumphant concert last year to present the excellent new “Ten$ion”. Other additions include the wisdom of James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) on the decks on Friday the 15th at Sonar by Night; danceable electronica with a pop sensitivity from Britain’s Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs; The 2 Bears, the new house project by Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Raf Lundell; the highly respected dj Untold, a mainstay of British bass music; the session by Daniel Miller, the founder of Mute and a living legend of new wave; the up and coming Barcelona kraut-pop duo Pegasvs; and the colourful show of mirrors by the American beatmaker Daedelus.

Besides those mentioned above, the festival will also feature Cornelius presenting the band salyu x salyu, the Brazilian experimentalist Ricardo Donoso, the Canadian remixers Keys N Krates, unusual musical-scientific ideas from Japan’s Masaki Batoh, the mysterious 5-piece band performing under the Mostly Robot monicker (in a show conceived by Native Instruments), and some of the most interesting outfits currently working in Spain, such as Lenticular Clouds, Lolo & Sosaku, D.Forma and Esperit!, among many others.

PBS Premiers Revolutionary New Documentary TV Series, “Food Forward”

Food Forward: Urban Agriculture Across America premiers April 5 in Los Angeles @ 10:30PM PT and other major markets across the nation.

Food Forward Productions and KQED Presents announce the broadcast television premiere of Food Forward: Urban Agriculture Across America in Los Angeles on Monday, April 5 at 7:30 PM PST on KOCE (PBS SOCAL). Check local PBS TV listings for air-times in other parts of the country as the show will be airing in most of the country.

Food Forward is a refreshing documentary series about the chefs, scientists, farmers, fishermen, teachers and others creating a healthier food system in America.

“We’ve all heard what’s wrong with the way we eat. It’s making us sick. It’s depleting natural resources. It’s unsustainable. Food Forward offers something different,” said Greg Roden, director of Food Forward. “Our program goes beyond celebrity chefs, cooking competitions and recipes to reveal the compelling stories and inspired solutions from Americans striving to create a more just, sustainable and delicious alternative to how and what we eat.”

The first episode in the series is shot entirely on location, from the rooftop farms of New York City to the food deserts of Detroit, Food Forward features food rebel John Mooney, whose space-age hydroponic farm on top of a historic building in the West Village of Manhattan, is a window into the future of rooftop farming. In Milwaukee, viewers meet the biggest name in urban agriculture, Will Allen, who is inspiring a new generation of aquaponic innovators.

After a stop in West Oakland, Food Forward finishes in Detroit with Travis Roberts, an eighteen-year-old who grew up watching the city struggle with increasing urban blight. In trouble and more than 100 pounds overweight,

Roberts discovers the city’s urban agriculture movement and finds a new purpose in life through urban chicken farming. Food Forward opens the door into a new world of possibility, where pioneers and visionaries are creating viable alternatives to our food system.

Additional content including deleted scenes, character profiles, recipes, production photos, videos and grassroots events will support the TV broadcast.

Subaru and Yogaworks to Sponsor Tadasana Festival Along with Gaiam TV, Kevita, Namaste Interactive and More

Earth Day Weekend marks the arrival of Los Angeles’s first yoga and music festival. And while much of the focus of the Tadasana Festival has been about the incredible yoga instructors, musicians, speakers, charitable partners and organizations, there is one crucial aspect that has not been forgotten: environmental sustainability. In an effort to leave as small a footprint as possible, the Tadasana crew has partnered with Santa Monica-based Sustainable Works in order to reach the high bar set by the event’s producers.  The goal of this year’s inaugural event: 100% zero waste.

“Through the implementation of an aggressive Sustainable City Plan enacted in 1994, Santa Monica is pioneering municipal sustainability through various policies, programs, services and education,” says Samantha Sommer, Residential Greening Program Coordinator at Sustainable Works. “Sustainable Works will guide the festival into a premier zero waste event that leaves no footprint. Sustainable Works will work with the festival and a volunteer team of zero waste ambassadors to divert 90% or more of all ‘trash’ from going to landfill through composting, recycling and education training programs.”

Throughout the three-day festival, zero waste ambassadors will manage the appropriate collection and sorting of all materials flowing through the event into compost and recycling stations positioned throughout the festival. All recycling and compost resources will be weighed and recorded to determine how many pounds of ‘waste’ were successfully diverted from going to landfill. In addition to this collection and weighing process, the organization will promote education about sustainability and use only non-toxic biodegradable products that do no harm to humans or the ecosystem.

“We all intuitively know that every day has to become Earth Day if we are to make strides toward real sustainability,” says festival co-producer Tommy Rosen. “The best Earth Day events are entertaining, educational and inspirational, so that an attendee comes away empowered with the knowledge, tools and desire to live sustainably the other 364 days of the year. Tadasana Festival is proud to partner with Sustainable Works to build and implement its comprehensive greening program in 2012, in which we are aiming for 100% zero waste, a feat never accomplished in a festival this size.”

Beyond zero-waste, there are many other initiatives over the three-day weekend to help promote sustainable living. These include:

•         City-wide effort to carpool, bike, walk and use public transportation to get to Tadasana Festival. The festival will offer a free bike valet to all participants.

•         Marketing Materials printed with soy-based inks on FSC recycled paper

•         Zero-Waste Stations: Recycling, Composting and Reuse.

•         Organic cotton used for Tadasana t-shirts

•         Stainless steel water bottles sold on-site.

•         Community Education Program: The Tadasana Waste Team will work with participants to understand the size of their carbon footprint and how to reduce it.

•         The Daily Love Lounge Speaker Series showcases environmental topics from green business to everyday living by important figures in the world of sustainability, including Mariel Hemingway, Revenge of the Electric Car director Chris Paine and architect Steve Glenn.

As a festival and organization, one of the driving ideals of Tadasana has always been environmental sustainability. From working with vendors and sponsors to helping them adopt greener methods of doing business to our process of waste management, the company always strives toward the goal of zero-waste events.

With just over two weeks until the Tadasana Festival of Yoga & Music takes place at Santa Monica beach during Earth Day Weekend, the companies sponsoring this inaugural event have been a key component of the festival’s success. Without the support on every level from these forward-looking, innovative brands, Tadasana would not have become the ground breaking festival it promises to be.

Subaru, whose current tagline is the yoga-appropriate “Confidence in Motion,” has come on board to support the festival and also Tadasana’s work with the Off the Mat, Into the World charity. To that that end Subaru has committed to donate $50, towards the goal of raising $17,500, for each test drive Tadasana attendees make at a Southern California, Southern Nevada or Arizona Subaru dealership until June 30, 2012.

Subaru spokesperson, Tim Murphy, noted “At Subaru, we are committed to supporting education, the environment, the arts, and healthy active lifestyles. With our sponsorship of the Tadasana Festival, we hope that its participants will experience the best yoga has to offer to positively affect their lives and the lives of others. Good luck to this year’s inaugural festival and we hope it will grow and prosper in the years to come.”

“Tadasana could not have a better partner than Subaru, a company that supports an active lifestyle and whose tagline is ‘Confidence in Motion’, a perfect sentiment that describes the practice of yoga,” noted Tadasana founder Tommy Rosen. Adding, “not only are they supporting our festival, they are also supporting our charitable partner Off the Mat, Into the World. We are just thrilled.”

The Subaru Tent will be one of five featured tents at Tadasana Festival. The other four tents have been sponsored by companies that, in their own way, are bringing social responsibility and environmental consciousness to the world. They are:

One of the largest yoga studio networks in America, YogaWorks, in addition to their branded tent, will also be hosting the Off The Mat, Into the World Fundraising class, which will be taught by top yoga teachers Seane Corn, Lisa Walford, Kathryn Budig, Kia Miller and Joan Hyman.

Gaiam’s focus on personal development, health & wellness and global consciousness has long been a leading vision in the world of transformation and healing. With the recent launch of Gaiam TV, the company now offers thousands of online classes featuring the world’s top teachers delivered to your computer or TV screen at one low monthly cost.

Kevita is a delicious, sparkling probiotic superdrink that combines the finest organic ingredients, including fruits, teas or coconut water, organic plant extracts and probiotics. This handcrafted vegan drink is dairy, lactose, gluten and soy free and helps to support digestive health, maintain the immune system and delivers more active cultures than yogurt.

Namaste Interactive is a web design and development studio that enables conscious companies to shine brighter and work smarter on the web. The company produces inspiring designs and affordable tools to market and manage any mission with ease.

Sustainable Works, an environmental education and action non-profit organization, has worked in partnership with the City of Santa Monica to manage and deliver various programs and services to the business, student and residential community since 1998. Our programs focus on waste reduction and resource-use efficiency, as well as enhancing human health and quality of life.  By focusing on the daily actions of businesses and individuals, we excel at the development and implementation of sustainable living, initiatives and policies.

Tadasana Festival was founded on the premise of producing a large-scale yoga and music festival in which there is direct interaction with incredible teachers and amazing musicians from around the planet. Never before have yogis been able to experience such a breadth of sonic craftsmen and movement specialists in one place: Santa Monica, the mecca of American yoga. The fully improvised collaborations between yogis and musicians—many of whom have never met before—are certain produce lasting bonds and powerful experiences for everyone in attendance. Tadasana Festival takes place April 20th through 22nd beachfront in Santa Monica at 2600 Barnard Way, Santa Monica, CA 90405 near the corner of Ocean Park Blvd and the beach. “We The Party” Movie Hits Theaters April 6th

Hitting theaters nationwide April 6th, WE THE PARTY is a colorful, cutting-edge, multicultural comedy about a group of teenagers coming of age during America’s first black presidency.  “Teenagers are at the center of a seismic cultural shift,” says writer/director Mario Van Peebles. “Their world is changing fast, from their music to their dancing, jerking, twerking, skateboarding, dating and facebooking. Thug life is old school now and, for some, smart is the new gangsta!”

Filmed on location in one of Los Angeles’ tougher areas, the fictional “Baldwin Hills High School” comprises a broad cross-section of teens from different races and backgrounds – from gang-bangers sagging, to the skinny jeans and skateboard swag crowd, to the upper-class entitlement kids of Baldwin Hills.

The movie chronicles the adventures of five tightly-knit friends as they plot to up their game, lose their virginity, out-maneuver the school bully, and take the girls of their dreams to prom. Tensions mount when it’s suspected one of the students stole the prom money. With prom about to be cancelled and police on the scene, the students turn on each other…only to learn things are seldom what they appear.

Set against the backdrop of the latest music and dancing, WE THE PARTY features Snoop Dogg, YG, The New Boyz, The Rej3ctz, The Pink Dollaz, Mario Van Peebles, Michael Jai White, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Tiny Lister, Melvin Van Peebles, Mandela Van Peebles, Simone Battle, Moises Arias, Orlando Brown and Quincy Brown.

“WE THE PARTY is the real deal, not necessarily how adults want us to be but how we are,” says 16-year-old Moises Arias of  “Hannah Montana” fame.

“Mario’s kids were fans of our music,” says the New Boyz. “He wanted to make a legit movie about today’s teenagers with all the new music style and swag, and he put us in the film.”

“It’s not the car you drive or the clothes you wear, the real party is inside. WE THE PARTY,” says Melvin Van Peebles who does a cameo in his son’s film.

“It’s been almost 20 years since we’ve had a good House Party or Breakfast Club,” says Michael Cohen, Mario’s executive producing partner. “WE THE PARTY is going to surprise a lot of people.”

“I have not felt this kind of intense street energy behind a film since New Jack City. I wouldn’t have known what today’s teenagers are experiencing if I didn’t have teens myself,” says Mario Van Peebles.

Million Hoodie March for Trayvon Martin | Thousands Gather [Photos]

It’s not just a march, it’s a MOVEMENT!

words/photos by: Shareef

March 26, 2012- 30 Days after the murder of Treyvon Martin, the people of Los Angeles have finally held an organized march and rally, not only in Trayvon’s memory but for social political injustice.

The event started with a small attendance but gained a steady momentum as speakers from local to national organizations as well as actors and activists like Bishop Noel Jones, Najee Ali and Royale Watkins, participated for the evening.

Two hours into the rally, Pershing Square was filled with supporters and media lined up from the sidewalk on Hill Street, in perfect timing for spectators passing by at rush hour.

Initially, I wondered about the outsiders’ perspective as well as that of the media-if the media and police were  expecting thousands of people wearing hoodies to turn the rally into a spectacle or if they only considered the racial aspect of the protest and not the blatant nature of the crime.

(Channel 7 newscaster in his suit looking uncomfortable in the crowd)

The intensity of the crowd was easy to differentiate from the mainstream media covering the event, who stood aside cautious and fully aware of the climate of emotion. The outcries for justice were hard to ignore but the tension was neither menacing nor dangerous.

The few black nationalist groups holding court, such as the New Black Panthers and Nation Of Islam, might have seemed intimidating or too political for some, but politics aside, anyone could get a sense of family orientation with mothers, fathers and families by the hundreds in full support of the cause.

One couldn’t help but be impressed at the unity and urgency for human rights as each speaker and voice adamantly conveyed a common message: this protest was for equality for all people of color. This wasn’t a black thing, but a human thing.

The rally progressed with nearly a thousand or so supporters organizing into a march down Hill St and zig- zagged through Downtown with each street shut off by police. The sea of signs and voices calling for justice for Trayvon Martin made a massive impression which alone is a success. The image and message was clear. This was a peaceful protest with an objective that stayed on track without missing a beat.
