Rebirth Brass Band 2012 GRAMMY Nomination for “Rebirth of New Orleans”

Rebirth Brass Band is extremely excited to announce that their latest record, Rebirth of New Orleans has been nominated for a 2012 GRAMMY for Best Regional Roots Music Album. It was produced by Tracey Freeman (Harry Connick, Jr.) and engineered by Chris FinneyRebirth of New Orleans was released earlier this year on Basin Street Records to critical praise from across the music spectrum. For a taste of the album, download “Do It Again” HERE.

Hailed by the New York Times as “a New Orleans institution,” the Rebirth Brass Band have been at the forefront of the brass band revival that they helped kick off almost 30 years ago. Formed by the Frazier brothers, Phil and Keith, along with Basin Street labelmate Kermit Ruffins in 1983, The Rebirth Brass band has gone from playing on corners in the French Quarter to selling out concert halls across the world and appearing in David Simon’s HBO hit“Tremé.” It’s been a long road, but The Rebirth Brass Band has become one of the most beloved brass bands in New Orleans and around the world.

Since their founding, they’ve developed a signature brand of heavy funk that they expand upon on their latest effort, Rebirth of New Orleans. Opener “Exactly Like You” starts the album off with a rollicking, Mardi Gras stomp. “The Dilemma” and “Do It Again find the group locking in to a down-tempo, Latin-influenced grooves, anchored by Phil Frazier’s tuba. And “Shrimp and Gumbo” and “Feelin’ Fine” find the band effortlessly perfecting the New Orleans-style brass lines that put the city on the map.

“A New Orleans institution since the 1980s, the Rebirth Brass Band updates the traditional strutting rhythms and continuous improvisation of New Orleans parades with an infusion of funk. It doesn’t need microphones, amplifiers or anything but breath and rhythm to make a crowd jump.”The New York Times

Dwight Trible Releases Anticipated New Album, Cosmic

Cosmic is the long-awaited recording by Dwight Trible, one of the most prolific vocalists of the time.

This recording is the follow upto his critically acclaimed Living Water, which made a big impression throughout the world. On Cosmic, Dwight brings an A-list cast of characters to bring forth his heartfelt expressionsof love for human kind and for love itself.

Musicians like Grammy nominee John Beasley and long time collaborator Munyungo Jackson help create the Cosmic landscape. Also noted areappearances by Kenneth Crouch, Trevor Ware, Dexter Story, George Harper, Kamau Daaood,Peter Jacobson, and Justo Almario. With a cast like this it is easy to imagine all of the musical territory covered in this recording.

Dwight chose to record and release Cosmic through Katalyst Entertainment, an independentand rapidly growing label headquartered on Chicago’s south side. His rationale behind the decision is simple: Katalyst offers him the freedom to create music that the larger, moremainstream labels may not necessarily support. Founded in 1993 by music industry veteran Kevin Beauchamp, Katalyst has built a strong repertoire for offering artists freedom and goodmusic to fans.

Many jazz musicians will tell you that they prefer not to work with singers, because most jazz singers lack the ability to improvise, have no understanding of musicianship, nor any of the othertraits associated with making jazz music – one of the most interesting and exciting musical genrestoday. Dwight Trible is a singer who combines the best of vocal virtuosity with musicianship and improvisational skills to the delight of audiences and musicians alike. In addition to performing with his own group, the Dwight Trible Ensemble, Dwight is the vocalist with the Pharaoh Sanders Quartet and is also the vocal director for the Horace Tapscott Pan AfrikanPeoples’ Arkestra.

Not a newcomer to the music scene, Dwight has worked with such notables as Oscar Brown Jr.,Charles Lloyd, Billy Childs, Kenny Burrell, Kenny Garrett, Steve Turre, Harold Land, HarryBelafonte, Della Reese and Norman Conners, John Beasley, Patrice Rushen, Babatunde Lea,Ernie Watts, Kahlil El Zabar, as well as contemporary soul artist like LA Reid and DJ Rogers. Dwight’s collaborations with Horace Tapscott, Billy Higgins, Kamau Daaood and others haveproduced some of the finest musical moments in Los Angeles in recent years – and his best is yetto come!

Like his mentors, Dwight is not content to use his music just to entertain people, although he isquite a dynamic performer. He uses his music to bring people together, to bridge the gap betweenthe races, and to heal the human heart. He has received numerous awards for his humanitarianefforts.

“Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone” National Broadcast Premiere on Jan. 22 & DVD Release Feb. 22

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone will have its national broadcast premiere on Monday, January 22nd, 2012 as part of public television’s AfroPoP documentary series. The series, produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and co-presented by American Public Television (APT), kicks off it’s new season with Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, which documents the history of legendary Los Angeles band Fishbone.

The film is being distributed via digital and home video by Cinema Guild, which will present the film exclusively via iTunes starting February 1st, 2012 as part of the celebration of Black History Month and then via home video starting   February 22nd, 2012.

When Fishbone first emerged from California, no other band sounded or looked like them, and the weight of their innovative and iconic presence is still being felt decades later.  Coinciding with the group’s 25th anniversary, filmmakers Lev Anderson & Chris Metzler have directed a compelling new documentary, narrated by Laurence Fishburne.  Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone is both a fascinating and brutally honest look at the band’s history for longtime fans, as well as a perfect entry point for newcomers.

Everyday Sunshine is a documentary about the band Fishbone, musical pioneers who have been rocking on the margins of pop culture for the past 25 years.  From the streets of South Central-Los Angeles and the competitive Hollywood music scene of the 1980′s, the band rose to prominence, only to fall apart when on the verge of “making it.”

Laurence Fishburne narrates Everyday Sunshine, an entertaining cinematic journey into the personal lives of this unique Black rock band, and an untold story of fiercely individual artists in their quest to reclaim their musical legacy while debunking the myths of young Black men from urban America.  Highlighting the parallel journeys of a band and their city, Everyday Sunshine explores the personal and cultural forces that gave rise to California’s legendary Black punk sons that continue to defy categories and expectations.

At the heart of Fishbone’s story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling, out of pride, desperation and love for their art.  To overcome money woes, family strife, and the strain of being aging Punk rockers on the road, Norwood and Angelo are challenged to re-invent themselves in the face of dysfunction and ghosts from a painful past.

The documentary includes interviews with: Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ice-T(rapper), Branford Marsalis (saxophonist), Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), Questlove(The Roots), and more.
