Mobb Deep Discusses ‘The Infamous’ presented by Rock The Bells & Reebok Classics

Mobb Deep‘s Prodigy speaks from the studio about the origins of Havoc‘s haunting, wobbly hooks, sampling jazz records inherited from the legendary Budd Johnson, and finessing the MC skills that made The Infamous a classic.

Snoop Dogg Receives BMI Icon Award At 11th Annual BMI Urban Awards

It was an all-out hip hop fest at the historic Hollywood Paladium on August 26th as Snoop Dogg was honored by BMI as a music icon.

Artists old school and new walked down the red carpet in support of Snoop, and the presence of such a diverse group of musicians was proof that no matter who they were or what genre they represented, they appreciate the multi-faceted entity known as the Doggfather.

Although many artists won BMI Awards that night, including B.o.B, will.i.am, Lex Luger, Sade and Nicki Minaj, the big winner was Drake, who got called up so many times to accept his multiple awards that he ended up staying on stage as the winners were read so he wouldn’t have to go up and down so many times.

Once the awards were handed out, though, the party was all about Snoop.

As he sat in the front row with his wife and three children, artist after artist came on stage to perform classic Snoop songs.

Wiz Khalifa was first up with his rendition of “Gin & Juice.”

The Game did “Murder Was The Case.”

The audience lost control when Daz, Kurupt and Warren G stepped on stage and did “It Ain’t No Fun” almost in its entirety.

Imagine hundreds of grown folk in fancy dresses and suits, shouting out all the dirty lyrics to that song in unison: classic.

A surprise moment came when Nas hit the stage and did his tribute.

After the performances, the BMI award was presented to Snoop by none other than his one-time partner Dr.Dre, who seemed happy, laughing through his speech as he reminisced over his homie Snoop Dogg.

There was one more peformance after Snoop received his award, and this is when all of the aforementioned artists, joined by the legendary Bootsy Collins, and Charlie Wilson, came back on stage and performed with Snoop.

I want to say that it was a great West Coast party but a healthy number of East Coast artists were there to honor Snoop: Chuck D, the RZA, Busta Rhymes, Nas.

The BMI Awards have proven that everybody loves Snoop D-O Double G.

MC Mic Stew Wins First East Coast Stop Of Red Bull EmSee

–Philly Local Wins Spot to Compete against Nation’s Best Freestyle MCs in Finals–

Philadelphia—Last week, eight of Philly’s freshest freestyle MCs headed to the Trocadero to battle it out at Red Bull EmSee but only one walked away the champion.  In a night filled with piercing punch lines and lyrical acrobatics, MCs DNA, Finesse, Voss, Jawnzap7, Uno Lavos, OHM and Zm came ready to throw down, but it was Mic Stew’s quick wit and lyrical flow that earned him the champion title after an intense series of heated battles.  He’ll advance to the Red Bull EmSee national finals in Atlanta later this fall.  Last night’s battle, hosted by rapper Bun B, was judged by a panel of hip-hop heavies including Redman, Schoolly D and Joell Ortiz. The talented DJ Greg Nitty kept the beats bumpin’ throughout the show.

The Red Bull EmSee competition format puts a spin on the traditional rap battle by providing random prompts and cues on screens that the MCs needed to hit in each of their flows, challenging them to truly spit rhymes off-the-dome.  Winner Mic Stew explained his experience, “It was one of the greatest challenges to my craft.”  He continued, “The celeb lineup was a blessing. Redman and Schoolly D are legendary.” Mic Stew was able to impress all of the judges with his freestyle skills – Redman noted that his “confidence made his words sound more convincing.”

In between rounds, fans and competing MCs were treated to special performances by the judges but it was Redman’s conclusion of the night that really got the crowd excited.

After participating in last year’s Red Bull EmSee battle series, Mic Stew sharpened his skills and returned to claim the local title. “This year, in comparison to last, was bigger, better and doper. I went 10x harder,” said winner Mic Stew.

Mic Stew is a Philly native that used to battle for fun in High School because he didn’t like how other cats were rhyming or what they were rhyming about. That was the extent of his battle experience and it was never his goal to be the best battler of all time. He’s a songwriter and performer first and foremost but freestyle is the root of both of those things for him. He’s at home on the mic and finding rhythmic patterns in just about any style of music on the fly is “pretty much a sleepwalk for me.” Mic Stew is expanding his artistic horizons by experimenting with film and music. His band, GuerillaFunk, will be releasing two singles this Fall. Also coming up, his appearance at the Red Bull EmSee finals in Atlanta, which he is “stoked for.”

If Mic Stew indeed wins the national finals, he will be heading into Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica to work with a producer of his choice from a select panel.  But first, he’ll have to go up against some of the best freestyle MCs from around the country.  The next Red Bull EmSee battle will be hosted in Houston on September 8, 2011 at Warehouse Live.  For more event information, click here.

Redbull Music Academy Presents DâM-FunK | Listen & Love

Train Wreck Mix – London Session
DâM-FunK
Stones Throw, Los Angeles

Known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk” this man represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere to the fullest. Headquartered in the Culver City section of L.A., Dam (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles known as boogie, modern soul and electro-funk. As a DJ, Dam attracts the most discerning boogie funk aficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince and Prelude Records, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries more obscure but equally funk-worthy. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dam also channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of modern funk: it comes as now surprise that Peanut Butter Wolf brought him on to the Stones Throw team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. A new chapter for Southern Cali space funk? Dam right!
